MONDAY, AUGUST 1, 1949 COMMUNICATION :To The Editor Daily Alaska Em- pire, Dear Sir: I am a short-time resident of Juneau, Alaska, but wish to state that in the short) time I have been here: I have cer- | tainly enjoyed the place very much. I do wish to bring to attention of | the parents of Juneau children one | fact, however. This fact I believe the people of Juneau are overlook- ing. The = Evergreen Bowl Play-| ground and its able direc Mr.‘i Garrett certainly deserve m sup-) ~port than they have received from Juneau people. : { In the short two seasons Mr., f Garrett has been in charge of the | Bowl he certainly has accomplish- | ed wonders. Some of our people { have complimented him but many | % hgve never given it a thought and | many people have fought him un- ,derhandedly. One teen-age girl, to | cite an example, was overheard to !say to Mr. Garrett that she was | so glad that the tennis back- board blew down that Mr. Garrett { and his Evergreen Bowl club erect- | [ ed that sne was reaiiy happy. ! Is that any kina of support to| give such a benefactor of dur city #and its children? Another fact out Iside of the Lions Club, how many i organizations who say they do so| | much good have supported Mr. ! Garrett? I was not surprised to| | hear that Mr. Garrett had accepted ,a position in the Middle West! where athletics were appreciated. I have no children up here, but if I had I would certainly investi- gate why this man who has serv- ed Juneau so well is leaving and try to influence him to make a longer stay. Then I would enlist his support for other worthy pro- Jects. 1 The contests he has had for children have never seen parents attending them. What is«the mat-; ter, folks? Make your answers. I don’t know. /s/ William Wheeler. ONTARIO SAILS FOR ESQUIMAULT TODAY The HM.C.S. Ontario under the command of Capt. Hugh F.
