PAGE SIX e e ———————————————— - celican Chatter PELICAN, Alaska, Jan. 10— (Special Correspondence) —No doubt this will be remembered as the winter of the “big snow" as fully six feet of snow fell within a peri of several weeks and oldtimers have declared this is the most they have ever seen at Pelican. Several small buildings collapsed, a numcer of roofs weakened and sagged, power lines fell, and getting around town was really rugged until a crew of volunteers faithfully shoveled the sidewalk for four days. A great many ptarmigan, driven down from the mountains by the heavy snowfall have been seen very close to town Many of our local residents are on trips outside and visits to other Alaska towns. Jack Stearns, opera- tor of the Club Cafe is in New Hampshire visiting his mother. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mosher are spending | the winter in Oregon City, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Johnson and son Carl spent several days visiting in Douglas before continuing on to Lake Stevens, Wash., to visit their families for two months. Mr. and Mrs. John Enge and young son Ar- nold went to Petersburg to spend the holidays with relatives, and Mr. Enge has returned to supervise the packing out of Engstrom Brothers fish, Visiting in Aberdeen and Seattle is Mrs. Einar Ojaniemi who is ex- pected to return at the end of the month. Mrs. Ed. Waltonen spent the holidays in Juneau with her son- in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. L. C. Polley, and is ncw in Seattle v'siting friends. Accompanied by their nephev Arvo Hammaleinen, who is a stu- dent at Colleze of Puget Sound, Mr. and Mrs, Kalle Raatikainen are touring the United States. Arvid Ackerman, bookkeeper for K. Kaat- ikainen is in Astoria, Ore., at the home of his parents. The Rev. and Mrs. C. C.
