Va, 1947 winner of the All-American Soap Box Derby, is typical of the young Americans who rise to prominence through their participation in “the world’s great- est amateur sporting event.” Now a 15-year-old high sophomore, Kenny time to carry on a nationwide cor- respendence with hunderds of would-be Soap Box Derby winners An school in cities across the nation. His brilliant victory at Akron, Ohio, last summer in the'10th annual running of the great boys’ sports SATURDAY, JULY 17, 1948 or some type of mechanical re- search work. At the moment, he has indicated that hfs college work will be along engineering lines. Kenny has a 10-year-old brother who is looking forward to the day when he can attempt to follow in his big brother's footsteps, and “the champ” says the younger boy will be a lad to watch next year when Derby season rolls around A new car design, planned under | the altered specifications set forth in the 1948 Scap Box Derby Rule Book, is also occupying Kenny's time, and he expects to give help- ful design hints to his friends. He will serve as an official at his hometown ce this summer, and cf course, will be on hand at Akron for the national finals And not the least of the honors that have come to Kenny his clean-cut victory at Al year is his nomination since last West on as | Virginia's Outstanding Athlete of somehow finds | classic, his sound car design and | excellent craftsmanship in the building of his speedy race car all qualify him to advise other younger boys who are planning and building cars for the 1948 race, to be run at Akron August 15 under the joint sponsorship of 150 of America’s leading news- papers and the Chevrolet Motor Division. Certification of his four-year col- lege scholarship, the grand na- tional prize awarded by Chevrolet to the new champion each y assures Kenny of a university edu- cation when he has completed his high school work. In addition, ¢ scholarship at Morris Harvey College, in Charleston, which he won in his local Derby, awaits his decision. The champ’s varied activities well-rounded interest in the pursuits that engage most American boys. Kenny has ambi- tions to hecome a baseball pitcher, and already has developed a cred- itable curve ball which will un- dergo further refinement under the eyes of his dad, a thoro going baseball fan. In addition, the lanky youngster (he stands almost six feet today) plays forward on his church bas- ketball team in the county league.
