Salef wrote to Swanson 're of his circumstances, and nson had wired to Salef. This telegram was not delivered to Salet but returned to Swanson stating that Salef had passed away. Salef was a resident of the Cove for over 17 years and his many friends will regret to hear of his sudden passing. ELFIN COVE, May 25—C. A, Mor- tensen on his boat the Relief had a serious accident this morning at Grave's Harbor. One of Mort's hands was caught in the V-Belt of the motor and one finger was severed and mangled and. hand badly truised. Frank Luhr on the Elfin II loted the boat back to the Cove ac- mpanied by Nels Bjkerness on his boat the Amor. A plane was called and Bjkerness, tcok Mortensen to Port Althorp aand met the plane at 11 for Juneau Tom H. Other trol- lers in are, Wildbill, Selma, and the Feroy. George Dalton and wife of Hoonah were in on their halibut boat Wash- ington. The Daltons came from Glacier Bay here for fuel at Stan- dard Station and are on their way to Juneau., George killed a black bear at Salt Lake weighing over 200 pounds with a very beautiful <kin. Mrs. Dalton says there is more snow than usual for this time ot year at Salt Lake. - Four large Seine boats from Ana- cortes, Wash., stoppel for fuel at the Standard station. The boats are the Prince, the Deception, Dont- worry and the Traveler, all are go- ing to the Westward. Wesley Turner, of Juneau, was a passenger on Alaska Coastal flight Saturcay for the Cove. He is fishiing the boat Relief. The Relief belongs to C. A. Mortensen who was injured in Graves Harbor and will not ke able to fish this season. Captain Chris Arni on the Lulu J., a resident of Wrangell and an oldtime fisherman around here, came in from Seattle where he spent the winter. Chris feels fine again and lcoks well. Mr. E. O. Swanson has purchased new scales for the store. They add to the store service as well as being goorl looking. The boat Elizabeth landed fish at Swansons scow and the boat Inga took fuel at Standard Station Sun- day. The Halibut koats Aegir and the U. & I. werein for food supplies as well as gas and oil. Only seven candidates have filed for the seven offices to be filled The main issue of the election is on the incorporation of that com- munity as a second class city. If the voters elect to incorporate the city, the candidates will also be eligible to take office. Candidates are Herbert Bremner, Harry Bremner, Sr., John Ellis, Jay B. Mallott, Ben Peterson,James A. Voorhees, New York attor- v, as Assistant Secretary of the Army, Voorhees, 56, was an Army officer in the last World War. Voorhees has been the army’s food administrator for occupied areas since 1947. In that job, he Eought the huge quantities of supplies need- ed for the relief programs in Ger- many and Japan. As a colonel during the war, Voor- hees directed programs for equip- ping army forces overseas with med- ical supplies. He received the Dis- tinguished Service Medal for this work.
