Fish and Wlldlafe Service Anticipafes Additional Funds Increased appropriations for the management of Alaska {isheries seem now to be definitely assured, the Fish and Wildlife Service has announced, and a greatly intensi- | fied program of law enforcement | will be put into effect this year. More men, planes and patrol boats will be on the job than ever before and with the salmon runs badly in need of watchful care to bring them back to full pro- | duction the Service promises the kind of enforcement demanded by all branches of the Alaska fishing industry In recent years men and money have been lacking to do a full scale job and some of the fishing regulations have heen given little attention. Chief among these are the sections governing the types, sizes and numbers of nets a boat may carry and operate in Alaska. Most of the fishermen have obey- ed these regulations but there are many who have taken advantage of {the situation to use gear that has been proved to be highly detri- ;mrnml to conservation. The sys- tematic checking planned for 1948 will turn this equipment up and it will be seized and destroyed as contraband, with extra penalties and loss of valuable fishing time {to those who possess it. | The Fish and Wildlife Service would prefer that the fishermen themselves 1all in line and put all their gear in legal shape before the season opens rather than wait | | | jfor legal proceedings costly to themselves and the Government. NEW BUSINESSMEN GROUP DISCUSSES " (. (. MEMBERSHIP Today's regular weekly meeting of Juneau businessmen failed to reach a decision ' on the future of the group but did accomplish much in |determining its possible policies. Considerable discussion was heard on the possibility of the entire group |joining the Juneau Chamber of Commerce. Chairman Joe Mangan appointed a committee to study the by-laws and constitution of the Chamber and report back to the new | | group. A committee report on forming a Junior Chamber recommended against such a proposition because of the 35-year-old ~age limit and other disadvantages. ‘The group will meet again next Friday in the Gold Room of the Baranof Hotel and some action may be taken at that time. - INTERIOR WEATHER The weather continued mostly fair over the Tanana Valley yes- terday and last night with the lowest night-time temperatures | around 25 to 30 degrees.
