Simpler, Cordova delegates to the annual | C1O-Alaska Cenvention held at Ket- chikan this week, are stopping over in Juneau on their return trip to | Cordova. | They report that the convention |was quite successful, with sev- !eml major resolutions pertaining {to the welfare of Alaska and its people decided upon. Foremost on their program is a resolution requesting members of the Senate and House committees on fisheries to defer action ~on the Cengressional bill, which - provides for the leasing of fish trap locations { to present operators for a period of 15 years, until “full and adequate hearings are held in’Alaska on these me: res by the appropriate Con- gressional committees.” “The Convention has taken no stand for or against the bill,” Rock-| T well said, “but we feel that it is only fair that Congress wait for an expression of opinion on the sub- ject by Alaskans.” A second resolution endorses a special session of the Territorial Legislature, but only if the Gover- nor feels that legislation for an income tax, property tax, and busi- ness tax, as proposed” by Senator Victor Rivers in the 1947 session, would be enacted. The resolution calls for a.gradu- ated fish trap tax, and expresses opposition to any kind of sales tax. 1t further requests that the Go nor “refrain from calling a special session of the same legislature which sold the people of Alaska down the river.” The Convention also resolved that the Governor, “as a putlic servant of the highest order, who has con- sistently worked for the best in- terests of the people of Alaska” be reappointed as Governor of Alaska. Other endorsements of the Con- vention were for the re-establish- ment of the Coast Guard in Alaska, a Territorial appropriation of funds for an administrative assistant to Alaska’s delegate in Congress, pay increases to members of the Terri- torial Legislature, and the return of 60 percent of the taxes collected on marine motor fuel to municipalities for maintaining marine facilities. mployed ~ 1038 Chev, Coupe. .
