CARDS WIN LAST NIGHT, LAST FRAME By RALPH RODEN (AP Sports Writer) The ability of the St. Louis Car- dinals to come from behind in the late innings and then go on to win, is one of the primary reasons the Red Birds lead the Brooklyn Dodg- ers by a full game today in the torrid National League pennant race. Several times during the campaign, the Cards have seeming defeats out of the the waning part of a game. They did it again last night when Rookie outiielder Erv Dusak hammered one of southpaw Johnny Vander Meer's cfferings into the left field bleach- ers at St. Louis in the tenth in- ning to enable the Cards to down the Cincinnati Reds, 2-1 present pulled fire in Stage Is Set Stan Musial set the stage for Dusak’s blow last night by singling in a run in the nin to tie the sccre. Until then, Vander Meer had blanked the Caras i-0 on two hits. The Dodgers’ scaeduled game with the Philadelphia Phillies was postponed because of rain. The Phils in a single Cards tangle under the Brooks meet the game today while the with the Reds again lights. Doubleheader Brooklyn will play off yesterday’s postponement Thursday, with a doubleheader that day if rain can- cels today’s tilt. Elsewhere in the National League, the Chicago Cubs split a double- header with the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning the opener, 13-3 and drop- ping the eight inning nightcap, 13-0. Smashes 3 Homers In the American League, Hank Greenberg smashed three home runs to pace the Detroit Tigers to 4-3 and 10-1 victories over the St. Louis Browns. The twin wins also stretched a Tiger winning streak to ten games and clinched second place for the Bengals as the pennant winning Boston Red Sox nosed out the third place New York Yankees, 5-4 A scheduled National League twin bill between the Boston Braves and the Giants was postpened because of rain while the other Americs League club were not scheduled. Greenberg's three homers gave him th league lead with a total of 41. At the start of the day he had been tied with Ted Williams of Bosten at 38 apiece.
