Doughton, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, says that hearings on social security revision will be held this summer. We are told that Congress will be asked to expand the present Social Security Act. The idea is to extend benefits to more people, including farmers and domestic workers and cthers who aren’t now covered. This seems an opportune time to give consideration to a program that will really give protection to b= the aged, the infirm, and the blind, and at the same time throw into motion machinery that, will guaran- o5 tee real and lasting prosperity. I refer to the Townsend Plan for < national insurance. There are now three bills in & Congress calling for the enactment of the Townsend Plan. One is Spon- m sored by Rep. Pat Cannon, Florida, w3 Democrat; another is sponsored by =) Rep. Homer D. Angell, Oregon, Re- ) publican; and there is a Senate bill < offered by Sen. Claude Pepper, Florida, Demiocrat. All three are & identical bills. When Mr. Doughton’s committee holds hearings on Social Security this summer, why not invite the TERRY L O 5oin the Army’—(and here com. Townsend people to present their arguments for their Surely, in a democracy, do no less. The Townsend Plan has been program? we can - George Washington University, has & written an exhaustive report which 15 proves the fundamental soundness of this program. I understand that this report is in the hands of many % Congressmen. ( A plan as sound as the Town-' send Plan merits the close attention of Congress. and the American people. I believe it should have a hearing this summer. I don't see how we can' logically discuss Social Security reform without giving con- sideration to the Townsend plat- form. | (Signéd) G. E.
