We Mutually Pledge to Each Other Our Lives, Our Fortunes and Our Sacred Honor.” —The American Declaration of Independence This American soldier doesn't ask for much . . . . at least no more than an average, EQUAL CHANCE to fight against our enemies, for de- cency, for his loved ones, for his Country . . . . HE is asking YOU to give him the weapons which will make that fight AT LEAST an equal one, and all he asks for is AT LEAST ten per cent! . . One tenth! That part of your income, be it large or small, for all that you have and so that what you have may not be taken from you! The tithe! The tenth part for the memories of Washington, the brave and wise; for Jefferson, who wrote the cardinal tenet of democracy into the birth certificate of the American Republic; for Lincoln, who could not rest while one human being was under the thrall of slavery. For the great cities, broad plains, fertile fields, the rich mines, lovely val- leys and towering mountain peaks! From Alaska to Maine our people are asked o loan their Government one tenth for freedom! One tenth invested, out of your earnings of the present in the future of your couniry. One tenth saved every day in the peak of your strength which will be returned with rich accrual in the days when age and decrepitude may impair your earning power. One tenth for a Government of Justice, chosen by yot in a land of lib- erty and opportunity. That is what the War Savings Bond means to you!
