Lee, chairman of the astronomy department at Northwest- ern University, as one of the prin- cipal astronomical features of 1940. He said the heavens also would exhibit two solar eclipses, a number of meteor showers, and “of course, | the astronomical joker, an unchar ed comet, may appear at any time.” The transit of Mercury, he ex-| plained, is the planet crossing the disc of the sun. It will be, visible in most of North America from 2:50 pm. (E. S. T.) until sunset on No- vember 11, he said, The planet mov- ing off the sun will be visible in Northeast Asia The last such transit, according to astronomical records, occurred in 1927. The next one, after this year, is scheduled in 1953, Only one eclipse will be visible in North America, he said. It will be the annular eclipse when the moon is so far from the earth that it does not cover the entire disc of the sun, and will occur April 7. It will reach 65 per cent of totality in the Middle West at 4 pm. (C. 8. T.) and will be seen as complete across Southern California and the north- ern edge of the Gulf of Mexico. | A total eclipse October 1 will be seen only from Northern South Am- | erica and Southern Africa but will be visible as a partial eclipse at sun- rise in Southern Florida.
