I'd say take 'em—but with reservations, Sisterhood is only of the spirit in most entertaining of the week’s pictures. who've debuted together, partied together, gether undertake to track down a killer together. Head sleuth is Barbara Stanwyck as the madcap society girl who wanders innocently into a murder scene at 3 am. and then can't get the police to believe there a murder. M Manton is so piqued at their scoffing, and so annoyed at a personable newspaper editor (Henry Fonda) who pillories her publicly as’ a time-waster and a parasite that she (1) turns detective seriously, (2) falls in love with the newsman, and (3) gets so involved in the business that she nearly gets murdered herself. Directed by Leigh Jason, “The Mad Miss Manton” sustains interest as a who-done-it thriller and holds up, for the most part, as good comedy. Oct It's Sister Week in the preview “The Mad Miss Park Avenue gone everywhere anton,” gals to- was “The Sisters"—which is about blood sisters “Four, Daughters” although it might pass as such. The period is 1904-08, the place Silver village drupgist (Henry Travers) and his wife (Beulah Bond) have three daughters: Bette Davis, Anita Louise, Jane Brayn. The story traces the trio’s romances between one presidential election ball and the next, with the main emphasis naturally hit- ting the marriage of Bette and co-star Errol Flynn. Flynn plays a San Francisco reporter, a romantic cuss but not much good. Bette marries him and keeps on loving him in spite of all—all including his drinking and losing his job, his deser- is not a sequel to Bow Montana. The WHY NOT ENJOY A REALLY DELICIOUS SUNDAY DINNER AT THE NEWER—FINER PERCY’S tion, the San Franeisco earthquake fire (rather sketchily presented) and the steady, tender and faithful attentions of her boss. The acting is good, Flynn especially succeeding as the weak- ling, and Miss Louise surprisingly effectiv in her hardish, wordly role. But the best thing about the picture is its reproduc- tion of an earlier American scene, a triumph either of the re- search department or for foreign director Anatole Litvak's keen perception of ways and life new to his experience. and In “Five of a Kind” we get the most famous sisters in the world, Dionne by name. It’s the third of the quintuplet features, and it ought to be the last until the studio finds a story. They didn't have a story when they sent a troupe headed by Herhert. . Leeds to Callander to film the quints in their native habitat. When they got back to the sound stages, they still hadn’t a story. And when they previewed it, all they had was hash—pleasantly seasoned, of course, by the shots of Yvonne, Annette, Cecile, Emelie and Marie. The quints at four years of age are cute kids, and so natural that all. the movie mammas should set aside a day for blushing. They sing unintelligibly and talk the same—English or French it’s difficult to report. Victims, besides Leeds, to the kiddie-worship saecrifice include Claire Trevor, Jean Hersholt, Cesar Romero, Slim Summerville, Inez Courtney—most of whom deserve better. time Top-grade po M.S.
