NEW YORKERS ENJOY THER _ COCK FIGHTS Night Club Proprietor Pulls : Sport Off in Enter- taining Manner By GEORGE TUCKER NEW' YORK, April 4—If you bustle ihto El Chico about midnight you are very likely to find yourself 2 gaping at a cock fight, and if you are fortunate enough to be sitting | with Benito Collada you are in for |a very interesting evening. Collada was once a lieutenant un- der Pancho Villa and he is, among the owner of the El Chico, which is most assuredly a | grandee among Spanish restaurants| in Manhattan. | Each year about this time he departs on a leisurely talent hunt, | combining the concert halls of Spain and the nightclubs of Mexico. This is why his revues are a melange | of Flamenco dancing stars, guitar recitalists, and aristocrats of the Spanish entertainment world. But though they frequently are unable to speak one word of English, they are top-flight artists and invari- | ably graduate to the Met ballet or| the conservatories here and abroad. Being an impulsive fellow with | a lively imagination Senor Collada |of fighting cocks. Brmgs Offiee, sonny” city'maps and for enly mage. a hasty pilgrimage to Cuba and returned with a double brace These were the champions of the Havana pits and their spurs were like surgeon’s scal- pels. Mindful that cock fighting is il- legad in. this country, the imagi- native, Benito drew his colleagues into &, huddle and emerged with a cracker-jack floor show number. A couple of clowns appear on the floor with a rooster in their arms. When they see each other (the roosters, that is) their desire for mayhem knows no limitations. Af- ter their rage reaches the satura- tion, point a third clown arrives | with an_artificial game cock that is wound up like a toy and per- mitted to hop about the floor. One of - the *eocks, usually the one that seems: the angriest, is tossed free and he promptly overwhelms his phoney antagonist, spurring him unmercifully and winning a splen- did victory. After this mechanical rival is vanquished the victor is s0 pleased with himself he stiuts about like an European dictato who has successfully enginee a purge. Ocassionally the mechanics of the show 'are varied and a rubber bal- loon in the shape of a game cock is tossed into the pit. The enraged battler, not realizing he is coping with thin air, attacks the newcomer and smothers him out of existence. - Fresh Fruit and Vegetables California Grocery THE PURE FOODS STORE Telephone 478 MRS.STACKPOLE THAT SHINER yewll know what i HOL (T UPe TO TH' LIGHT, GOOGLE: T SWOW HER LOOKS GAVE Out Varwd Comment is to feel independent.” Suddenly there is a loud explosion, leaving a mighty puzzled rooster gaping and wondering if he hasn't made a mistake in leaving the barn yard Note: Senor Collada’s - fighters work only évery other week. There are four of them and they spend the | off week on a farm in Connecticut. A comic note to the fight was added recently when - Benito, without warning his comedians, tossed a trained duck into the arena. The duck wore a little hat and trotted about the floor yelling “Quack- quack!” The comedians surprised! You should have seen those Cuban| roosters. g g g e L CHAPELADIES TO MEET Anncuncement is made that the Chapeladies will meet Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Tom Barekstsen. - - Brazil's area is greater than that of the continental United States by 250,000 square miles.
