WAL, SHE HAIN'T STRANGER - N ME. AN SAIRY THIS-A-HYEH D SIX DEAD UF PNEUMONIA AT ANGOON Severe Colds and Influenza Beginning of Illness, Dr. Murray Says With only three Indians still ill from bronchial pneumonia as the | pneumonia epidemic in two weeks, the malady seems to be dying out, according to Dr. Vance Murray, Medical Director of the United States Bureau of In- | dian Affairs, who returned early | this week from a visit to the strick- | en community. Among those stricken with the | bronchial pneumonia, which had seemed to develop from acute in- fluenza, the only common trait was that all victims were men, unusual- ly active and hard working, most of whom were housed in comfort- able homes. According to the his- tory told Dr. Murray, the men had apparently caught colds working in the wet and tried to work them beds, bronchial pneumonia result- ed Succumb Quickly With one exception, those who succumbed to the disease Were men between forty and fifty years of | age, the other was a young man of | eighteen, Dr. Murray said. Death | came quickly after the development | of pneumonia, some dying in only four days while others withstood it for seven days. The three men who are still ill, seem to have passed the acute stage and to be | slowly recovering, Dr. Murray said. | Feared Hoodoo Due to the fact that Angoon had previous epidemic during which a number of their ! residents had passed away, many | munity felt that the town I FINE | was at very reasonable rates PAUL BLOEDHORN FRONT STREET P U Phone Gardmal Cabs Cigarettes Candy Cards The New HYEH, - WE-UNS HEERED SHE STOLDED A PASSEL O' 41800 WE-UNS KICKED HER PLUMB OUT'N WELLIN' HOUSE . . hoodooed. A number decided they had better move from the town while others thought the town itseif should be moved. 3 Among some, the theory that the water system, consisting of two shallow reservoirs from which mountain water is supplied the town, might be responsible, out Dr. Murray declared that he be- lieved the water had nothing to do with it. He bases his rejection of this idea on the fact that only | men were affected while both wom- en and children would have been had the water been at fault. ‘Another reason I do not be- lieve the water could be the cause of the epidemic is that Good News Bay had a similar epidemic in September when five people out of geventy-five died in a short pe- riod. T was in the vicinity and made a trip to the town where I found the situation similar to that of Angoon,” Dr. Murray stated. Prominent Victims Among the victims of this bron- | chial pneumonia epidemic in An- goon are several residents of prom- inence, William Johnson, Albert Dick and Eli Katinook. All are well known throughout Southeast Alaska and their demise brought great regret. Eli Katinook, graduate of the Russian Mission in Sitka, was for- merly soloist in one of Juneau’s churches and had taught school in Angoon for a number of years. He was at one time on the Pantages vaudeville circuit and was highiy thought of by his countrymen as an orator. Miss Mary K. Butler, Bureau of Indian Affairs nurse at Angoon, was highly complimented for her work in caring for the stricken vic- time of influenza and pneumonia ————2 4 Arctic Pabst Famous Draught Beer On Tap WE-UNS HAIN'T A-GONTER HEV HER AGGERVATIN '‘ROUND NO MORE NOHOW - - - LR PHONES 83 OR 85 Dr. Murray, who also compli- ented Mayor George of Angoon, cancelling all public gatherings heduled, in order that the influ- enza might not be spread. Severe colds, not properly cared which developed into influenza and later bronchial pneumonia, is the reason given by Dr. Murray for this apparent epidemic. - Danish Traffic Becomes Deadly by m COPENHAGEN — Traffic acci- dents are taking an increased toll of life in Denmark. In the first half of this year, 101 persons were killed and 3,349 injured, compared with 69 killed and 2,643 injured in the first six months of 1933. Bicycles were responsible for 1,205 accidents. POPULATI[]N OF LONDON DROPS LONDON, Dec. 7.—The popula- tion of the largest city in the world | has been falling steadily for 12| years. Between 1921 and 1933 the pop- ulation of the metropolitan bor- oughs—according to figures issued | by the London country council— | has decreased by 185923 to 4,298- 600. The decline is attributed to sev- | eral factors, among them bemg< the fall in the birthrate, the grad- | ual encoachment of industrial ac- | tivity in residential districts, and the creation of “dormitories” in nearby counties, where commuters | i } i | may live cheaply.
