THE DAILY ;ALASKA EMPIRE,-FRIDAY, MAY. 4, 1934. e —) JAMES DUNN HAS! [0 {FEATURED PART STARTS TONIGHT (CAPITO] Film fans who expected a great deal of dramatic punch and intens- ity, were undoubtedly more than satisfied when “Hello, Sister,” Fox drama featuring James Dunn and “If a woman mar- ries the wrong man — and the right one comes along— night. Presenting a realistic and human story of present-day, life in the shadows of New York's Great White ‘Way, the drama gripped the emo- tions at the very start and moved with accelerating tempo to a pow- erful’ climax involving each of the five principals, James Dunn again demonstrates his ability as an emotional actor ” too late . . . . . She prove: to be everything advance notices have claimed for her. Strong and able direction was highly evident in the finished performance she gave. | Of the supporting players ZaSu Pitts very nearly stole the show as the homely girl-friend whose love for Dunn is doomed to frustration. We| have had such a surfeit of Amer-| ican drawing room tales, that this | story laid in the back country of Hungary during the World ‘War | comes as a pleasant and invigor- ating surprise. The love story is a particularly fascinating one, depicting the strug-| gle of a woman between loyalty to her husband, old enough to be her father, and love for a dashing young cavalry officer. All the in- gredients of powerful drama are and bitter hate. The colorful for-| eign settings, the rapid-fire action, | and the thrilling climax in which | a man drives himself to death overi' make this a picture which forces the spectator to sit up and take notice. Walter Huston Superb No little of the distinction of “Storm at Daybreak” is due to its flawless acting. Kay Francis as the woman torn between loyalty and | devotion plays her role with a pas- | sionate ardor. Nils Asther does the best work of his career as the cav- alry officer who is forced to turn on his best friend, and Walter| Huston, as the husband, has a dif-| ficult role which he carries to su-| perb heights in his final stirring scene of self-sacrifice. { Others in the fine cast who give \ outstanding performances are Phil- Eugene Pallette and Jean Parker. CARD PARTY WAS MOST SUCCESSFUL| ‘With the success usually attend- ing their affairs, the members of Perseverance Rebekah Lodge No. 2 A gave a “White Elephant” card party at the I. O. O. F. Hall on Eleven tables of contract, auction and whist were in play during the enjoyable evening which was con- cluded with supper served by the hostesses. Prize winners for the card games were: contract, Mrs. R. J. Mc~ Kanna and John Newman; for auction, Mrs. Jennie Brumberg and Thomas Dull, and for whist, Mrs. - e “AT HOME” UNTIL NEXT FALL WAS HELD ' AT THE GOVERNOR’'S HOUSE | Yesterday afternoon, from 3:30 R.
