DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE DEVELOPMENT EDITION—JUNEAU, ALASKA, SUNDAY, JANUARY 28, 1934. FIRST SECTION TWENTY PAGES—5 to 12 VOL. XLIL, NO. 6559. Northland Proves Huge Business Asset to £S5 ALASKA. as a great trade asset to the Nation, is clearly depicted in figures, compiled for the Alaska Territorial Chamber of Com- merce by James J. Connors, Collector of Customs for the Alaska district. ’ Since its acquisition from Russia by the United States this Terri- tory has imported from the States practically one billion dollars worth of commodities. The actual figures from 1867 to 1932, inclusive, were $924,704,196. 4 Probably Ultra Conservative This figure is probably ultra conservative. From 1867 to 1903 no official records were kept of the commerce between the Terrizory and the rest of the country. In the latter year the Treasury Department and other Government agencies obtained reports from various sources upon which it based estimates of the trade for the period 1867-1903. Following that time the United States Customs Service kept trade records based upon shippers’ declarations of value. The value of imported commodities from 1867 to 1915, using estimates covering the first 36 years, was fixed at $587,827,710. The next sixteen years exceeded that sum by more than 100 per cent, aggregating $1,102,747,384. In view of the fatter figure, it is believed by the Territorial Chamber that the estimates for the carlier years are low. Is Good. Customer The statistical data gathered by Canned fruits are a favorite food, it is evident, as 21,965,727 pounds of them were consumed in tRe the Territorial Chamber, . which appears in adjoining columns, fur- nishes indisputable proof of the value to the Nation as a customer that Alaska has come to be. It is largely incomplete in that it cov- ers only nine years—from 1924 to 1932 inclusive. Yet in that time, less than a decade, the 60,000 white and Indian residents of the Terri tory have purchased from Territory in the nine years. Pa- cific Coast States apple growers found a market here for 334523 boxes of that fruit, and California’s citrus growers sold 155,463 boxes of oranges. The quantity of other fresh fruits and dried fruits, is not available, but Alaskans consumed $2,224,331 worth of them. Heavy Coffee Users Alaskans probably drink as much if not ‘more coffee per capita than any other people. In nine years 8,207,289 pounds were consumed. This is a yearly average of 911921 pounds, or about 15 pounds per capita annually for every man, woman and child residing in the Territory. Nor are they entirely in- different to tea and its soothing effects as 1,473,976 pounds of that leaf were brewed for beverage purposes in the -same period. Al- most one million gallons of other beverages, nonalcoholic, and fruit juices were consumed, also. Sugar to sweeten the coffee and tea and for other purposes to- taled 57,942,103 pounds, valued at $3403746 was sold on ' the local market. In addition it required more than 400,000 gallons of mo- lasses and syrup, and 9,838,863 pounds of confectionery to sate the desire of Alaskans for sweets. Doesn’t Affect Tobacco 3 Dieticians and other scientists claim that persons uho use sweets largely, use the tobaceo weed spar- ingly if at all. That ‘may be true in other climes but not here on the last American frontier where the pipe, cigars, cigarettes and chewing tobacco seem equally pop- ular, In the last nine years Alaskans have consumed 520,406,000 cigarets alone. This is an average of about States proper a total of $270,236,009 worth of products of all kinds. Included in the list are every ar- ticle of food, clothing, fuel, furni- ture, industrial machinery and equipment, materials and supplies of all kinds. It is by no means con- fined to the necessities of life. Luxuries are as surprisingly out of proportion to the population as are things required in everyday living. Cotton Tops Wool Those millions of Americans who have been taught to think of Al- aska as a land of ice and snow and glaciers with an Aretic climate that demands the warmest and heaviest of clothing will be surpris- ed to learn that cotton wearing apparel in the past nine years has largely exceeded in volume and value garments made from wool- ens. The ‘official records show that from 1924 to 1932, cotton wearing apparel purchased in Alaska was valued at $5,788,498, while woolen apparel bought during the same period had a declared value of but $3,390,618. Silken garments gre not altogether unknown ere, either. Shipments of them arriving in Alaska in the same nine years weye valued at $709,697. Foodstuffs were a large factor in the trade. In that nine years, there were 380,783,111 pounds of: fresh beef and veal consumed in the Territory and almost 1,000,000 of the same commodities pickled were used., Fresh and pickled pork was another large import, the to- tal quantity having been slightly more than 9,000,000 pounds. More than 14,000,000 pounds of cured ham, bacon and shoulders were purchased in the same period. On top of these great quantities of meat, poultry to the extent of al- most 3,500,000 pounds was bought and shipped to the Territory. Much Condensed Milk Condensed and evaporated milk was another large item. Shipments of that commodity in the nine years for which figures are avail- able, aggregated slightly less than person over the age of 17 years in the Territory. In addition to that, 26,026,000 cigars and cheroots, mostly the former, were smoked; smoking tobacco, largely pipe, since few Alaskans “roll their own,” con- sumed aggregated 2,257,508 pounds; tobacco chewers used 504,737 pounds and other tobacco manufacturers amounted to 509,175 pounds. The Territory’s total tobacco bill for the nine years was $7,255810. Other ‘Commodities Used Although Alaskans own more motor boats than motor cars, the motor-car industry has shared some in their .prosperity. Two thousand and nineteen automobiles were sold to Alaskans for $2,536,117 in the period covered by the table. Boats, cars "and tractors, and other gas-combustion equipment . | purchased 1,327,551 barrels of gaso- line and naptha for $8,092,473. Ship- ments of diesel oil and fuel oil for boats and furnaces amounted to 3,164,082 barrels worth $4,118,- 279, A total of 6366 internal combus- tion engines were sold on the Al- .| aska market for $2,636,562. ing more than $1,000,000. Almost $750,000 was spent by Alaskans for tractors and other 100 packages, 20 each, for every| Classification of Shipments — United States to Alaska COMMODITY Unit Beef and veal, fresh . Lbs.
