Nicholas Biddle, dely known sportsman of Toat city, and Harold Green, Curator of Museum exhibits in the same | institution, are passengers on the steamer Yukon for Seattle enroute to the East. Maj. Biddle said he was already planning to return | to Southeast Alaska in 1034 for | a bear hunt. He and Mr* Green had hoped to stop here on the presentsouth- bound trip, but pressing business | called Maj. Biddle back home and Mr. Green did not care to con- tine his own hunt alone. ! Both of them ‘reported a hlzh]y enjoyable expedition this year. They killed the moose on Kenai Pen- insula and the caribou were ta-| ken near Circle. One of the moose | of the largest on record. other was a fine specimen, also.| The woodland earibou are also| excellent types of that species of | animal. The hunters were fortu- nate enough to witness the an- nual Fall migration of caribou from the north fo the upper Tan- ana valley. They obtained a number of pictures of this great| mass of slowly moving animals but, since they were unable to develop them in the field, th2 dao not know just how succeasrul\ they were. They were guided in both ex-| peditions by Henry Lucas, well-| known Seward guide. ————— J. P. MORGAN RETURNS FROM INTERIOR TRIP ON STEAMER YUKON ¥ P. OLHSON ON TIE PLANT That some progress is being made by the Alaska Railroad toward es- tablishing a tie treating plant, probably at Seward, was indicated here today by the receipt of im- formation that a Forest Service expert on that process is now en- route to Anchorage to confer with Col. O. F. Ohlson, General Man- ager, regarding the project. Word received today at regional headquarters of the Forest Service said that G. M. Hunt, member of the scientific staff of that bureau's experiment station at Madison, Wis,, will seil ‘from Seattle tomor- row on the steamer Northwestern for' Seward. His mission, the telegram said, Is to disouss some of the problems of treating hemlock for railroad cross ties purposes. Several months ago, Col. Ohlson announced he was en- deavoring to ebiain authority to install such a plant. The railroad | has quit n!u muy ‘manufactured | ties for creosoted ties which are purchased in Seattle. This change was made last Win- ter and caused a storm of protests to be made to the Secretary of Interfor. ' It was defended on the ground that the treated ties are | superior to the untreated and that their use will save the Government a considerable amouynt of money annually. By installing a treating plant of its'qwn, the railroad hopes to be able to use-docally made ties.
