E I P s Leader Department Store GEORGE BROTHERS S THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, WEDNESDAY, DEC. 9, 1931 —1FLOCK OF DUCKS MAKES CALL ON LOCAL HUNTERS irds Pay Respects of Shortened Season to Howard and Kearney Forty fine mallard ducks broke rom a V-line formation in he sky over Gastineau Channel il | this morning to alight on the wa- ters of the harbor. For an hour, n the brilllant sunshine, they wam leisurely backward and for- il |ward in front of the Admiral teamship Line wharf. They cast mirthful glances, seemingly, at a arehouse office window where rice Howard, agent, and Jack Kerney, assistant agent, of the navigation company, both doughty portsmen, with mournful visages azed at the secure and happy irds, Wary In Other Years Usually at this time of the year the ducks are wary of the steam- |ship marksmen and at the sight of |them never come within gunshot |range. But this year the fowls evidently are aware that the cus- omary open season, September 1 o December 15, was curtailed by ederal ukase to just the thirdy days in September. So migrating outh, the ducks thought they would unt up their erstwhile hunters to pay them the respects of the short- ened season. Quacks End Social Call The ducks ended their social call when their leader sounded a few quacks, a good-bye, which seemed to contain something of jestful good-natured railery. Then ther winged their way upward. Having assumed their V formation thej mounted higher as they flew south Finally as tiny specks they werc lost to the view of the two pairs of eyes that peered from the steam- ship warehouse office window.
