A. RESCH CHICAGO, Ill, Dec. 9.—There is pandemonium in the pit . . . wheat surges upward . . . . Ii's a bull movement that jars world markets out of the doldrums . . Somebody has made tremendous ‘Whenever the headlines spread that news, the name of that some- body who gets credit for the big- gest cleanup—whether accurately or not—is most apt to be Arthur W. Cutten. While Cutten's name had beén little in the news for some time the recent boom in wheat mar- kets has brought forth rumors and thrust him again into the grain trade limelight. Just who is this man whose coups in world grain markets are reputed to have exceeded those of James A. Patten and Joseph Leiter —kings of the pit in their day? ‘What kind of a personality has this enigmatic figure who was known as chief of the “big ten” @oes’t ‘know “him yet. "P¥bably no other man—unless it be J. P. Morgan—has attained - | financial eminence with the world knowing so little about him. It is not because this thin, wiry. . | unemotional, square-jawed veteman speculator wants to be that way. He is just naturally ultra-shy; ultra-quiet. There is a frank, pleasant gleam in the small, bright blue eyes that peer through Cutten's . spectacles, but he always carries the forbid- ding air of a man so preoccupied by his business that he finds it difficult, almost impossible, to turn to any ‘other subject—least of all to himself. In appearance he is the antith- esis of the reckless, excited plung- er of popular fancy. He might easily be mistaken for a professor of finance. Never does he hurry. His face displays no emotional reaction to the most sensational market de- velopment. i words: The office itself looks like a study in a wealthy man’s home— leather armchairs, a oarved desk, no frills. Asked for facts about himself Cutten will say he's “not interest- ing enough” for a personality sketch. Although this 60-year-old man still plays the markets “for the love of it” Cutten’s friends say he probably is happiest on his 800- acre farm near Chicago. There he raises about 1,000 hogs and feeds from 150 to 200 cattle each year. Alds His ‘Home Town Never has he forgotten his home town, Guelph, Canada. His boy- hood playmates ‘there ‘called him “Buzz,” and they still know him as “Buzz.” Guelph has Cutten to thank for its golf course, its com- munity house and the costly caril- lon on its church. Tt was only a few years ago that Cutten took out naturalization papers. “The two big things a man needs most to play in the market,” he WAKE UP YOUR LIVER BILE— “Chicago Perforating Com- has safd, “are vision and nerve.” Bankers have estimated his | wealth at from $20,000,000 to $50,- 000,000, but nobody ever has ven- tured a guess on his total profits | in grains and stocks. Not until recent years has he ex- expressed any desire to relax a little. “I've never been to Europe— never played at all—never had a chance to do anything but work.” | TIRES ‘WITHSTAND RIGID TESTS WITH PROPER INFLATION; LAFAYETTE, Ind, Dec. 9.--Good standard automobile tires, properly inflated, lasted in Purdue univer- sity tests as long as thou:ands of drivers own their cars. Eight tires were driven 36,000 miles on two heavy cars, and eight | other tires were driven 45,000 miles on two lighter cars. These casings were purchased in the open market by Purdue scien- tists. ‘The ‘cars were operated 24 hours of ‘the day, in shifts of driv- ers, over open roads, includin [gravel, stone and concrete, at 35 to 55 miles an hour. It is in the form of a miniature stock exchange, set up by Prof Roy L. Pernald, head of the economics department, and “played” on paper by 25 student “bulls” and ‘“bears.” The student’s class rating de- pends upon his success in manipu- lating the $10,000 (stage money) which he theoretically borrows at three per cent interest, plus his knowledge of hteory, obtained frem texts and collateral reading.
