THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, FRIDAY, DEC. 4, 1931. GAMES WILL BE PLAYED TONIGHT Douglas Fire_m;n, Public Roads and High School Are Scheduled ‘What promises to be three inter- ‘esung games of basketball will be played this evening in the gym- nasium of the Juneau high school. The contesting teams will be the Juneau high school against the Douglas Fire Department, the Ju- neau Alumni against the Bureau of Public Roads and the Juneau high school Freshmen against the Eighth Grade of the Juneau ele- | mentary school. Tonight's appearance of the Douglas Firemen will be their first this season on this side of Gasti- neau Channel. The Island smoke- eaters have already been defeated by the Douglas high school, tradi- tional rival of the Junaeu high | school. Coaches Can Conjecture The outcome of the game this evening will enable the coaches of |the two high schools to check the showings of their teams against the Island firemen, and, from the | two sets of scores, conclusions cap be drawn as to the strength of the scholastic organizations when pit- | ted against each other. Not a few | basketball enthusiasts favor the | Juncau high school team to win tonight’s battle against the Doug- |las smoke-eaters by at least three | baskets. | The Juneau students are anxious for victory. They have been in- vited to participate in a basketball tournament at Chilkoot Barracks Action on the invitation has not | yet been taken by the school | authorities. The boys want to make the trip, and they think their chances of being allowed to do so will be enhanced by a decisive tri- | umph over the visiting Firemen. | Keen Interest Manifested By many the .game between the { Juneau Alumni and the Bureau of | Public Roads is looked forward to with great interest. These two | teams will be members of the Gas- tinau Channel Independent Bas- | ketball League, organization of which is now under way. The |Alumni has players that have worked together for two or three | seasons, and they have been par- ticipants in competitive games two |or three times this fall. They are |expected to defeat the Bureau | athletes, but the latter may prove to be “dark horse” surprises. The contest between the Juneau high school Freshmen, and the | Eighth Graders wil lbe the curtain raiser. These aggregations have met twice this season, and are In their first encounter the Eighth Graders beat the Freshmen. In their second the Freshmen snatched victory in "Ithe last quarter by a single point Play tonight will begin promptly at 7:15 o'clock. S HI JINKS—SAVE THE DATE B. P. O. E.
