Marine News NORTHWESTERN VOYAGE MARRED BY TRAGEDY| Despondent Widow Severs Artery in Stateroom ~—Bleeds to Death Tragedy marred the voyage north of the steamer Northwestern, Capt. Jock Livingston, which arrived in Juneau from Seattle and wayports at 11 o'clock Saturday night with 120 passengers for Juneau. Bound from Seattle to Petersburg, Mrs, Bertha Hawley, aged 60 years, sev- ered an artery of her left wrist and Ibled to death shortly after she was carried ashore at Petersburg. Mrs. Hawley was called shortly before the a: 1 of the Northwest- ern at Pet urg and answered. A Yshort time later she was called again and answered. 'When the steamer was preparing to leave Petersburg, she was called a third time and responded that she could not leave her stateroom. Her voice evidently betrayed distress, for the door was forced open immediately. She was carried ashore. She sur- vived but a few hours. Two hun- dred dollars were found on her per- son. Mrs. Hawley came to Peters- burg from Anchorage in company with her husband last fall.
