RO p—— THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE VOL. XXXIV.: NO. 5172. “ALL THE NEWS ALL THE TIME” JUNEAU, ALASKA, THURSDAY, AUGGST 8, 1929. RECORD IS SET BY BROTHERS IN GROCERY TRADE From Small Beginning Now One of Largest Busi- nesses in North From a small space, occupying just one-half of a storeroom owned and partly used by their father, M. Qeorge, George Brothers in six years have grown to one of the largest exclusive grocery businesses in the North, owning its own store- house and warehouses, operating two large delivery trucks and em- ploying five clerks. The record of their growth is in- teresting. The constant and sub- stantial increase of their invest- ment and business is proof that the confidence they expressed in Harry Mabry’s CAFE “You Know the ) Rest ———d Juneau’s future when they launch- ed the enterprise was more than Jjustified. Start in Small Way Back in 1923, the three brothers, Thomas, Joe and Gus George, form- ed a partnership and opened the Quality Grocery Store. It was hous~ ed in one half of the shoe depart- ment of the Leader Store, owned and operated by M. George, their father. Of course, many of their friends advised against the venture and they were warned many times that the “grocery business in Ju- neau is overdone.” The young men, however, were not to be dissuaded. They felt they knew groceries, were willing to work long hours, and had confi- dence that Juneau's stability and prospects for future growth were such that there was a fine chance for success in the grocery trade. The three then pooled their re- sources and opened the store. They acted as clerks, waiting on the trade, ran a single small delivery truck, and nursed the infant busi- ness along. Growth Comes Rapidly | Growth came even more rapidly | than had been expected. The first | year’s business while not phenom-' enal was not disappointing. Before it had ended, it had been found necessary to employ a man to drive the delivery car. That was the only increase in overhead, however. The second year found the busi- ness growing by leaps and bounds. Sales were double those of the in- itial twelve-month period. A new man was employed to aid in the store. The stock was augmented by new lines. At this time the Quality Grocery Store found its quarters were get- ting too cramped for efficient serv- ice. The building next door was purchased as the next step in ex- pansion. It wasn't exactly suited to their needs, so hundreds of dollars was expended in re-arranging it. Continues to Grow About this time the name of the business was changed to George Brothers without change in owner- ship or partnership agreements. The three original organizers remained in full control and worked harder than ever to take care of a busi- ness that was still experiencing a healthy growth every month. From a small store handling mainly staples, it added fancy lines, high grade confectioners’ products, a fresh fruit and vegetable depart- “Meals As You Like Them” MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME At The CLUB BOB KAUFFMAN, Proprietor “The Best for Less” industry’s disposal.
