The last few hours before the vote on the Boulder Dam ara a good example. You will remem- ’ [ber that question was disposed of early in the present session after, to use the words of Senmator Hay- den of Arizona, it had “plagued 'seven states for more than seven years.” ~Here i3 how the ghow looked 8 ffom the sidelines. ‘Mr. Hayden. the junior Senator [from Arizoma, was on the’ floor plirposely fo explain how his state od. The Senator gave it as his opinion that so and cost no more than such and suc No, he didn't care what the engi- neers’ report on the subject said | THe Senator from Arizona could | |take it or leave it. The Senator| left it. Mr. Ashurst Calm The senior Senator from Ari- zona, Mr. Ashurst, in frock coat and grey trousers, sat at his desk writing in most undisturbed fash- fon. He gave the impression that tite was too full of Iimpbrtant things for him to be bothered un- til the proper time came. Both the Arizonians were exqui- sitely polite. Apparently the last thing in the world they de- sired was to make themselves un- pleasant or oppose anything any senator wanted. Senators flitted in and out of Senator from California be good s0 would | lvrrumml to ask questions or ex- press an opinion. Senator Over- man was nodding at ‘his desk. Senator Sheppard told Senator Simmons a funny story. Ashurst, probably thinking the proper time had come, got up and {walked around with a smile on his face. Back and Forth A vote was taken on an amend- ment offered by the Senator from Pennsylvania. It was defeated. Borah offered another amendment. Edge of New Jersey asked Borah just exactly what he meant by the {amendment, and the Senator tried to explain. Walsh arose and in- dicated that Borah evidently did not mean what he said he meant, surely Borah was' mistaken. The Senator from Tdaho said he was |not mistaken. ‘There was more argument. Borah then said he had offered the amendment only to make his position clear, and now that it ‘seemed to be clear he would withdraw the amend- ment. It was almost 6 o'clock beforc the vote. It passed 54 to 11. The seven-year battle was over. GOVERNORPUTS 'UP TROPHY FOR CRUISER RACE Governor s Cup to Go to First Boat Finishing in 1929 Classic A new trophy—"“Governor’s Cup” —has been put up for award in the 11929 Capital to Capital Yacht Race from Olympia to Juneau, it {was made known here today. It |is donated by Gov. George A. | Parks and will be awarded to the |first 6f the racing yachts to com- plete the course: The trophy is a 20-inch silver cup mounted on an ebony base. On it is engraved “Governor’s Cup— Capital to Capital Motorboat Race [vl’resenlod by George A. Parks. Won by (blank) 1929.” The name of the winner will be engraved in he blank space. Near the upper im of the cup is a raised figure of a motorboat and operator. The trophy is now on display at Emery Valentine's Jewelry Store. Gov. Parks is enthusiastic in his support of the race and belleves | it is destined to become the yacht- | ing classic of the Pacific Coast. It will serve as the medium of bring- |ing hundreds of sportsmen to the waters of Southeast Alaska, not | only those taking part in the race |itself, but other yachtsmen who are looking for mew scenic cruls- ing grounds every year, he is convinced. Plans for the 1929 race are be- ing worked out well in advance. {It is understood that the handicap- ping will be done at the start this vear, instead of at the finish, as was the case in 1928. This wi serve to bring the boats here elos- er together than in the initial event as they will leave on & han- dicap schedule instead of making the start simultaneously. i i §n}gHerS Catsup . 25¢ 25c émz Catsup i8sion PeaChes 2 GOOD EATING 200 Per Can Del Yel Monte Chicken Tamales 15¢ Per Can Coffee - 53c Per Lb.
