(Feature Service Sports Editor) NEW YORK, Feb. 11.—Pro foot- ball held no lure for Georgs Owen | and Myles Lane, but pro hockey | proved to be a different attraction altogether. These young men, who scaled the heights of athletic brilliance in eastern college circles, especial- ly in football and hockey, are now swinging sticks in the National} Hockey league. Owen, a graduate of Harvarl, af- ter resisting overtures made by the pro football moguls, needed four years to make up his mind not to resist the hockey oifers. Lane was action personified in snapping up a pro proposition. He joined the majors immediately af- ter finishing his college course| last year. Owen, one of the crimson’s| greatest football and allarourd stars, is with the Boston Bruins, while Lane, a former Dartmouth athletic luminary, wears the colors of the New!York Ranger“ Both are defense men. Owen, who broke inio the game two months after Lane's en- trance, is a regular. Lane, young- er and less experienced than old Harvard hero, rates as a spara with the Rangers, Owen has been more than just a player with Boston and his con- sistently good work has helped tie' Bruins set a warm pace for the; leading Rangers. Lane has been “coming along, as the hockey critics say, but his chief claim to fame still is that of being the first player to jump rect from college hockey ‘o the big league. The two former simon pure blade specialists are in line for company from the college ranks. Schools are turning out more and better players each year, and pro hockey is spreading, with a consequent| increased demand for talent. So another year and several youag men, now playing for glory will be getting paid for their dsc shooting. TEN ROUND BOXING IS LEGAL IN ALASKA The Houston Bill to permit pro- fessional Dboxing in Alaska and Hawaii, which has been signed by President Coolidge, according to an Associated Press Dispatch received by The Empire, is de- scribed by Senator Frederick Stei- wer, of Oregon, Chairman of the Senate Sub-Committee as a step tending to “‘enlarge the measure of self-government of the two tor- ritories.” The territories of Alaska and Hawaii, according to Senator Stei- wer, now have a lesser amount of self government than the people of Porto Rico or the Philippines, ! The Committee report said the; measure permits boxing matches | of 10 round duration except Sun-| days. 1 Contestants must be at least 18 years of age, and examined by a physician an hour befora the fight. The bill originally passed to.: House, was sent to the Senate. re- ferred to the Judiclary Commitice| and rewritten to clarify sevoral! provisions. N i B ' SEPPALA WILL B FAIRBANKS RACE Leonard Seppala, famous d¢3 musher of Nome now in the East. has notified the Fairbanks Kenn:l Club that he will be present at the annual sweepstakes to be held! here under the auspices of thej Club about March 15 next. This fact was developed at the sccond ,mmed to evening. in courtroom, and provoked animat- ed discussion among the members present. The news of Seppala’s coming was received with much enthus- iasm as it adds a new and un- expected feature to this year's races, and indicates the lively in- terest displayed in the Fairbanks' derby by the King of Mushers. The wire to the Club from “Sep- pala was from Lake Placid, New York, where he had just defeat- ed Howard Manning of Boston by ithe narrow margin of three and one-half minutes in a two-day : race. It is understocd that Seppala will start Ncrth after finishing the races in Quebec, where he was guaranteed the sum of $1,- 500 to secure his attendance.
