Dr. Axel Gauffin, director of the national museum, has a plan for converting Laeckoe Castle into a picture gallery. For a number of years it has been empty, and a proposal made last year to tuin it into a tourist hotel has been rejected as impious. It was once the country seat of the powerful de la Gardies, a French family that had become enobled in Swed en. The equally renowned castles of Gripsholm and Skokloster on Lake Malaren have already been converted into art museums. Two other castles, Sturehov and Loev- stad, will be made into museums before long, while part of tha once heavily fortitied castles of Vadstena, on Lake Vattern, has' g for some time housed the local archives. Some other castles are finding use as homes for old peo- ple.
