C. Moore recently drove over the North and South highway to secure first-hand in. formation about that road and found that much of the criticism concerning it is unjustified. Ap- proximately 200 miles of the 328 from Boise is an admirable high~ way in every particular. Be. tween New Meadows and Round Valley there is twelve miles ot old road which awaits the com- pletion of a bridge to open up the new highway on the other side of the canyon. There is but 28 miles in total of unfinish- ed road from Round Valley to Lucile and this is made up of several sections separated with finished portions of ‘excellent highway. According to the State Highway departmen $470- 000 are necessary to complete these sections of the road. At various points along the road contractors are working on sections of the highway for which contracts were let last year. At least $200,000 are be. ing spent on these and there are sections already contracted for which are awaiting better labor conditions for construction. The completion of a few culverts will also make this road much better for next year, The state highway depart- ment has on this road only the two or three engineers who are required for supervision by the federal government which is furnishing 58 per cent of the funds. Temporary clearing of the old road with $20,000 from the gas tax fund is being done at this time. To spend much more than this would be wasteful since eventually these sections will be built by contract. IDAHO PEOPLE STAY AT HOME, SAYS EDMUNDSON. Declaring that Idaho county people have great opportunities before them in a land of wonder ful resources, and that they should not rush_ to California, hoping to get rich quickly, but had better stay at home, T. E. Edmundson, for many years a resident of Grangeville, but now residing at Sawtelle, Cal., has written to the Free Press de- seribing economic conditions in that state. Farmers there are in terrible straits, writes Mr. Ed- mundson. They have paid ex- cessive prices for their lands, are deeply in debt, and cannot sell Buy Your Fall Needs in All _ Wool Clothing Early ‘ OVERCOATS IN LIGHT, MEDIUM AND DARK COLORS—ALL WOOL MACKINAWS IN STRIPED AND PLAIN COLORS—ALL WOOL FOR MEN AND BOYS STAG SHIRTS, STRIPED, DOUBLE BACK AND SLEEVE LEATHER VESTS, SHEEP SKIN LINED, HEAVY DUCK, CORDUROY FLANNEL SHIRTS, WARM SHIRTS FOR WINTER WEAR. The farming sections are in a bad way, worse, if anything than they are in Idaho. Around Fresno, where the raisin is the chief crop, last year’s crop re. mains unsold, and at Modesto the fruit growers were only able to dispose of a small quantity of their crop. The apricots they did not pick at all. “The farmers are badly in debt, having only a small equity in their places, and say, the ‘farmers certainly do work down here. If they worked this way up in Idaho county they would all be millionaires. The only thing that is boom- ing down here is Los Angeles real estate, and they certainly work it to the limit. My advice to those who contemplate com. ing here is to stay at home, for there are far more and better opportunities in old Idaho coun- ty than there are in California, and if Grangeville would only utilize what resources it has now it would have a population of over 10,000. “Too bad that $50,000 that was used on the South Fork road was not handed to some Los Angeles promoter to put Idaho county on the map. “You have a wonderful nucle- us to start with up there—a bunch of the finest people on earth—and we often thing about them.” —Idaho County Free Press.
