In The Neighborhood Interesting Items Taken From our Exchange List SHERIFF ON THE JOB. Sherig Eller put in an appear- ance Wednesday evening and re- mained until late Friday night. It was a noteworthy fact that a practically total absence of moonshine was the result. Act- ing in conjunction with loca) officers the sheriff made it known that booze was taboo and the diligence in keeping moonshine management of the fair is deep. ly appreciative of the officers’ out of town.—Kooskia Moun, taincer. BUYS COTTONWOOD HOTEL. O. L. Gleason, son-in-law of at- torney F. FE. Smith, closed a deal the first of the week whereby he took imntediate possession of the Cottonwood Hotel at Cotton- wood, the thriving little village. Mr. Gleason is known to many here, his wife and children hav- ing made an extended visit here a year ago. He is an experien¢- ed hotel man and his success at Cottonwood is assured. The hotel is a good property contain- ing 44 rooms, furnace heat and hot and cold water. F. E. Smith was in Cottonwood Sunday and Monday and handled the legal! end of the deal.—Orofino Tri- bune. GENESEE WOMAN DIES. Mrs. Frances Ebel, a resident of the Genesee section since 1887 passed away at 6 o’clock Wednes- day morning, September 26, of apoplexy at the ripe old age of 78 years and 12 days Frances Wilhelm was born at Potsdam, Germany, September 24, 1845, and came to America July 1, 1887, coming direct to Genesee, where -her husband, Chas, Ebel, had preceded her, he having come to America in 1876 and came to Genesee in 1879 set- tling on the ranch north of town which has since been owned and farmed by the Ebel family and where Mrs. Ebel had resided all these ye —Genesee News, MRS. HEITFELD PASSES, Mrs. Henry Heitfeld died Wed- nesday ev ng at 6 o’clock at) the St. Joseph hospital from a series of hemorrhages that weakened the heart. Mrs. Heitfeld was a pioneer of the Lewiston country, having re~ sided here since 1878. She is survived by her husband, who served Idaho for six years as U. S. senator; three sons, Stephen, and Walter of Wallace and Louis of Lewiston; two daughters, Elaine of Lewiston and Marie, Sister Rodriguez of Green services were held last (Friday) morning in St. Stanislaus Catholic church and burial was made in Lewiston cemetery. , On September 9 a reunion of the Heitfeld family was held and | all of the children were present, —Lewiston Banner. THE STATE HIGHWAY. We understand the village clerk has secured all rights-of- ways over lots and lands from Odd Fellows’ hall to the railroad track and beyond, on which the changed highway is to traverse, | ‘All is held in readiness for the state engineer to give the word to go ahead and grade. In case the grading is not complete when Rostell Bros., finished the rocking to the canyon and the Main street to the hall, the rock will he hauled and piled up along side of the survey and will have to be put on later. The money for the completion of this work is on hand, and the citizens gen- erally are anxious that as much} as possible of the work will be| done this fall. As for the con- crete work under the track, it is | hardly probable that it. will be} tackled before early spring. Someone has told us that one covering of rock extends to the} canyon bridge. Another party told us that Manager Price, ot} the Construction Company, was} gathering horses and men to do | the grading from the hall to the| railroad track and beyond, so the} rock could be placed this fall. | —Ferdinand Enterprise. | | LIVING IS COSTLY. Harland Moser writes us to address his Herald to 409 Woolly | Apartments, Pocatello, Idaho,| where he and his family are now located. Continuing, he gives us the foliowing interesting in- formation which we take the liberty of passing on to our read- ers: “We are very comfortably lo. cated here, but must say that while I have heard Nezpercers say that they lived in the highest priced town in the world, they should take a try at Pocatelio. Rents are plumb out of sight, and clothing and groceries are worse. Yes, there’s higher priced merchants than our friends in Nezperce. And Pocatello its clos- er to the eastern markets too. We had a very enjoyable trip coming down. The North and South Highway is certainly a wonderful trip. A short dis- tance between Riggins and Round Valley is not completed, and is pretty rough in spots but taken as a whole, it’s not as bad as reports will have it. We did not have a single detour the full trip, and would advise anyone coming to Boise to take the North and South Highway. “Say hello to our friends and tell them that we would like to take them by the hand in the good old fashioned way, like they know how to do it on the Nepperce Prairie.’”” —-Nezperce Herald. MUST RE-VOTE BONDS. The road program for Clear~ water highway district, which has been moving along nicely for some time and which includes such improvements which wil) bring added prosperity to the entire Clearwater section and ad- jacent territory had a monkey wrench thrown into its cogs the past week which caused things to pop “right smart” around these parts when the company who were negotiating for the purchase of the bonds, conveyed the startling news to our High- way Commissioners that, owing to a clerical error in the call for the election, at which the bonds were voted, the present issue of bonds were illegal and it would require calling of another bond election and the re-passage of the issue. _ Owing to the fact that the Bureau of Public Roads of the Federal Government have set up approximately $85,000 to match the local issue of $35,000 and that plans were well on the way for speedy action on the Stites- Harpster road, the failure of this bond issue at this time might be a serious matter, and consternation reigned among the citizens of Stites for a few hours after the reception of the news. But on serious second thought and after taking a careful can- vas of the vote in the highway district it was easily seen that the re-issuance of the bonds would be only a question of the number of days it would take to call the election and re-vote the bonds, as the sentiment in favor of the good-roads program is much more pronounced now than at any time in the history of this section.—Stites Enterprise, es se a Re es se ed $ DR.
