The accumlated dust will then be blown out and the machine cleaned. This method is decided- ly useful! and practical, as the dust has a tendency to accumu- late in denser clouds in the air pockets and obstructed spaces in the machine and blowing it out will keep it thin- ned below the ignition point. The other safeguard is the re- moval of spark, flame, or heat that ignites the dust. Investigation has proven that about half of the dust explosions are started. by discharges of static electricity. This static or frictional electricity is generated by friction of the grain and} straw on the moving parts of the separator. It can be removed to-a large extent by connecting | the various moving parts With wire connections x 5 a corimon grounding wire, which it at- tached to a rod which is driven two or three feet in moistened earth. The connections with the cylinder and blower fan shafts should be made with a copper strip so fastened and ad- justed that it will bear on a dry clean part of the shaft, and the grounding wire firmly fasten- ed to it. make wire joints is with solder, and in making connections with shakers the connection should be made with the metal parts, or pan, and be with flexible wire loose enough so it will not break from the motion of the machine. It is probable that striking cylinder and concave teeth do under favorable conditions create sparke hot enough to ignite dust. The cylinder and concave teeth should be kept in proper align- ment at all times so they will not interfere. If they are heard to be knocking the machine should be stopped immediately, and they should be straigtened up and tightened. It is possible to extinguish the fire from explosion or any other cause within the separator if sufficient water can be sprayed inside of it immediately. A large tank on the top of the separator, under pressure, with a sprinkl- ing system inside has poven ef- fective. The most practical de- vice for this purpose however is the Preston chemical extinguish- er.. It has operated successfully in a number of explosions, and so single instance. in smut.
