§ : oe eee COUNTY SEAT NEWS Word has just been received of the ‘death in Portland, Ore., of Mrs. Victor Baldwin, datgh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Zuver, of Grangeville. The body prob- ably will be brought to the old home at Grangeville for burial. This week Carl Zehner sold his farm about eight miles north of this city, known as the old}: Wasmund place, to William Wortman ,a pioneer farmer of that section. Mr. Wortman and son Edgar, who recently return- ed from service at Camp Lewis, will operate the place. A recent letter from Frank Van-Deventer, who with Mrs. VanDeventer has been spending the winter at Oakley, Idaho, where Dr. and Mrs. Rains are located, stated that they would return to Grangeville early in May. They left here early in the fall in their big Studebaker car, and from accounts of them at different periods have been having a grand time. In the district court + this morning Judge Wallace N. Scales imposed an interminate sent- ence of from one to two years ‘jn the Idaho state penitentiary on John W. Bates of ‘Dixie, who last week was found guilty of an assault with a deadly weapon on the person of Jack Hamilton. Bates is now confined in the county jail awaiting the arrival of the penitentiary guard, who will reach here some time next week, Mr. and Mrs. France Bowman received a message from New York last Friday from their son Lawrence, stating that he had safely landed with the 77th di- vision from France. In _ the party are also John Heath of Grangeville, and Melvin Hol- brook of Whitebird, the latter being a member of the company that Grover Johnson was at- tached to and only a few feet from him when he gave his life for his country. Snow is melting rapidly on Buffalo Hump for this season of year, said Gus Sholtz, Idaho county mining man, who recent- ly arrived in Grangeville from the hump. Mr. Sholtz said there was but six feet of snow on the hump when he left, and he be- lieves all the snow will be melted by June 1st, which will be con- siderably earlier than usual. Mining will be active in the hump country before July Ist, he asserted. Normally work does not start before July 15th. Mr. and Mrs. A. P. McBoyle were in the city early this week from their farm home north- west of town. Mr. McBoyle has about fifty head of ewes on his place and this season has cured an increase of about 160 per cent, there being three sets of triplets and 18 or 19 pairs of twins. The season is very fa- vorable and he will reap a nice profit from his investment. William Allen of Elk City was an arrival in Grangeville from the mountain country Saturday night, and spent several days in the city meeting friends. Mr. Allen is clerk in George L. Esh’s store at Elk City. Although business is quiet at Elk at the present time, Mr. Allen expects trade to pick up with the com- ing of summer. Two big min- ing deals are pending at Elk, he remarked, and he anticipates at least one of them will be con- summated. Grangeville’s Cowboy band will play for the Elks’ carnival in Lewiston on Saturday, May 17th. Manager Harris of the band this week completed arrange- ments for the band to visit Lewiston. Twenty local musi- cians and two fancy ropers, garbed in full cowboy regalia, will make the trip. Lewiston Elks will initiate a large class on that day. The class will include a score or more of Grangeville men, as well as candidates from Lewis- ton and all towns in Central Idaho. ® ‘@ | When in Grangeville all at “ BRADBURY’S” for your Ice Cold Drinks Cigars, Etc. emcee © The two distinct types of Eczema can be relieved readily by using Dry Zen- sal for the crusty, scaly skin, and Moist Zensa for the watery eruptions 75c ajar.
