They Scem to Have It All Their Own Way Now in Cereals and Provistons— Extraordinary Volume of Business— August Wheat at the Close of the Week Stands at’ $1.2S~—The Clique— Corn a Triitle Weak under Better Crop Reports—A Possible Tumble—Grease Up. “There has not been a time,” said a mem- ber of the Board of Trade yesterday, ‘since the Russian Bear undertook to garrote the Sick Man of Europe when speculation on the Board raged with so much fury as _[t does at. present. A few years ago, we thought when our firm’s trades amounted to 2,000,000 bushels a day we were doing an enormous business; but now the big firms treble and quadiuple that amount without thinking of it, and it is acommon occurrence for the sinall houses to buy and sell to the extent of a million or so daily. It is safe to say the trading in corn alone on Friday approached 40,000,000 bush- els. The bulls nave been in the majority, and have made money.” “Wheat has been quiet and higher,” said a broker yesterday. “An export demand is reported at New York, and the British mar- kets are steadily crawling up. Everything seems to favor the longs, just as it has all the week. Another twist has been given to Angust wheat, which stands at $1.28 per bushel. ‘They say Preston refuses to settle, which means that the clique expect to get more. They talk about $1.35, and even $1.50, before the end. September wheat is up to $1.19}, with many parties settling. I am inclined to the opinion that the line of August shorts is decreasing faster than the crowd thinks, and that THE BOYS WILL WAKE UP SOME DAY to find the clique have sold out. = “Copious showers in Kansas and elsc- where, with cloudy skies generally, have weakened com. The trading was large, but some signs were given that big. houses are turning over to the short side. September corn was 563/ cents to 58?¢ cents, and closed at about 5722 cents, with October at 5937 cents later in the day. I hear that Richie, who Bourh’ from 48 cents up, has $200,000 profit in his deal? a “Thave been talking with disinterested parties from the country,” remarked a con- servative man, ‘* They say lroquois County promises as bigayield of corn as last sea- sun. ‘The fields are green and vigorous, and don appear to" be injured a particle by the much talked-about drought. ‘The sane statement is made about Kane County. No harm has been done where there is a deep soil above the hard-pan. J think there Is actually more danger from cold rains and early frosts than from the recent dry spell. Corn likes a good deat of heat. Lt looks as if the market had been a_ little strained. When the diz longs begin to sell, look out fora tumble,”’ » ‘The boon in Jard yesterday was attributed to the faith and money some of the success- ful operators in corn were supposed to be putty into it. THE COAL TRADE. Another Advance of Fifty Cents Per kon, A special meeting of the Coal Exchange was held yesterday afternoon at the Grand Pacine Hotel. President W. A. Johnson oc- supied the chair. .As the result of consider- able discussion it was decided to advance sinall egg, range, and nut coal from S125 to $7.75 per ton, and. large eg from $7 to $7.50 pertou. The cause of this advance was that the stock of anthracite coal is now from 100,000 to 150,000 tons short of what it should beat this time of year. The coal men say that this advance. is based on the: Jake freights, which this year amount to $1.50 as tompared with 65 cents last year. Among the fizures presented at yesterday’s meeting of the Exchange were the following: Price Rt Buifalo, free on board, $4.93; frei BLG0; discharging, $0 cents; sereeniny, 15 tents; dockage, 10 cents; delivery, 4 tents} making the total cost of a ton of oal’ $7.58. This is {0 be, taken With the’ allowance of the. fact tat many of the dealers lad largestocks on hand at the opening of the season. ‘This action of Exchange yesterday is supposed: to pe xbsolute, but shrewd consumers may still be able to obtain reduced rates. ‘The Exchange fepresents thirty-six firms among the heavy dealers and shippers of the city, but as they have never disciplined a member of the Ex” change, it is fair to presume that they never Will, and hence dealers willbe able to make cut rates as heretofore, Smart consumers will not be fooled by this advance in rices, for in spite of the action of the Exchange _ there is still stock enough on hand to supp! bresent customers. —<——————$$$$_—— 4 The invalid wife, mother, sister, or child ean beads the picture of health with Hop Bitters. Wall Street Depressed by the News About Corn—Finauces in Chicago. The Produce Markets Active and Irregular —Provisions Strong, with a Good - Demand for Lard, Corn Depressed by the Country Rains, bat Reacted— Wheat Still Advancing—Other Cereals Higher. FINANCIAL. Stocks advanced under some moderate pur- chases by the shorts. Lake Shore was especially active, und there was some good buying of it. A report was in circulation ‘that all the trunk- lne magnates were in session at Suratoga, but it was not confirmed. Wall street advices rep-" resented tho street as bearish on the bad corn- crop news and the probability that the trunk- line war would continue. It was again asserted on what scemed to be good authority that Van- derbilt was a heavy borrower of money on his Government bonds, and that he had been for weeks a quiet purchaser of Northwestern, Lake Shore, and Union Pacific. The new Reading scheme meets with litde Javor. Some of the large stockholders in New York are opposed unulterably to the issue of $13,000,000 new stock to be given asa bonus to the holders of the junior securities as an in- ducement to them to exchange thelr bonds for the proposed 3 per cent B series, on the grounds that, according to the provisions of the charter, there can be no legal issue of stock without the payment of par in cash or its equivalent being made for the same. It is said that the friends of the bond management here and in Philadel- phin have generally been short of the shurcs, and it is argued that this authorization of £1 000,00) new stock, which Isto be given away, woutd, of course, reduce tho value of the samo in the proportion that $15,000,000 bears to $33, 726,375, the present amount of tho common stock outstunding, or would show a depreciation of Over 33 per cent. An injunction will be applied for to provent the execution of this newsebeme. Wheat was.again birher and rather steady, but was called weakiby some, while others regarded it as a strong market. There was more netivity {no settling up August con- tracts on wheat, some round lots being ttlled in. Corn was wenkened early by reported rains over large areas in Southern Illinois and extend- ing well north, but there was too much buying pressure to permit it to keep down, and some parties claimed that therains came too tate to do any good to the corn. Qats fluctuated more than usual. Rye and barley were stronger. Lard was bought.freely by the men who usually deal in corn, and this stimulated a better demand for shert ribs, but pork remained dull, though higher, in sympathy with other pork products. Liverpool advices noted an ad- vuncing tendency allround. Mess pork closed 10c higher, at $17.85@17.87% for September and $17.924G@17.95 for October. Iewns remarked Saturday that, while it may be conceded there is an urtitelal pressure on August wheat, the prices for September and October in this market are not higher than war- ranted by quotations elsewhere. Advices were received of a cargo of Duluth wheat sold in Liverpool at 53s per quarter, which netted $1.41 per bu io Montresl. This wus. undoubtedly choice wheat, but so is the. price ag compared with that of straight No. 2 spring. The latter was quoted Saturday in NewYork at $1.29, and it can be shipped trom this.city to that for 6c per bu. The confidence which has pushed up prices ts not, therefore, confined to Chicago. It is more nearly universal, whether or not it be Justitled by the facts in: the case, The Intest official estimate ef a shortage of 125,000,000 bu, as compared with Inst year’s wheat crop, is supposed by some to be an exag- geration; but there nre not wanting old heads in the trade who claim that the sbortage will be half as much again as that. British writers have all along been cluiming that current prices can- not be sustained, and civing as their reszon the (assumed) fact that American wheat will soon be pressing upoa the European market. If our shortage prove to beuything ke so great as is claimed there will be no pressure, unless it be in the other direction. The staple prediction that America will pave to begin carly and work vigorously in order to get rid of .its “surplus may prove a useless bazeling about nothing. z PROVISIONS, HOG PRODUCTS—Were stronger, and lard was much more etive than usual, While there was mora doing In meats, Liverpool reported an udvance of Sd Iniard, und-the strength in corn csused more de- maund for Iurd und meats, which was freely responded tu by holders. A good deal of lon stuff was sold, but chletly for future delivery. ‘There was not much de- wand for shipment, und but little pork was wanted by-any class of buyers. Parties in the trade sald that nyhort corn crop, such ay iy believed in by many, would materially reduce the hog yield of the coming winter, und especially tell upon the lurd produetion, which needs’ corn to muke it, while the stocks on hand (at all polats) are much staatlec tun year azo. ‘the Coren demand has, however, fallen to a very low point, asa consequence Of our higher prices.” ‘The stock of pork in tls city. esthusted st about 10,08 brls, and of Jurd ubowt 1.= OW tes. ‘he summer ng to dute Is estiated As 1G oss, wueainst 2 to du Inst year, und 13i6.0.0 todo in 137. ‘Mass Tuiti—Advanced 10¢ per bel from the Intest prices of Fricaz, und closed tlw.
