THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: SUNDAY, UNE 26, 1881—TWENTY . PAGES. BOARDING AND LODGIN BOARD WANTED, GATH ON GIBSON. How the Venerable Uncle Samuel Was Taken In Finan- cially. The People Who Are After the Star-Route Thieves. The Newspaper Nemesia Who Is Pursuing the Malefactors to Their Downfall. New Yons, June 24.—In the disputed Presidential election of 1376 Mr. Gipson, it is charged, went to Gov. Tilden and obtained aconsiderable sum of mongy from him on the claim that he had seen a letter written by Jonn Sherman promising offices to certain malefactors if they would suppress their dis- closures. Gibson had gone to Louisiana, and, as is generally believed, had become the dupe of a set of knaves down there who saw him having plenty of money, and extremely anxious to find a scandal, even if he had to buy it. They got some of his money, and madeafoot both of him and Mr. Tilden. A distinguished Democratic correspondent of the press was telling me only two or three days ago that when the question was raised fn the Imner Democratic circle whether they had better onen the Presidential dis- putenzain, Mr. Clarkson Potter said: ‘It isagainst my judzment. Our candidate Is now in the position of a nian injured. If we fnvestigaie his claims and tind nothing new, we invite attack from the other side, and put Mr. Tilden inthe attitude of a distnrber of the peace.” Several gentlemen in this coun cil agreed with Potter. Only Speaker Ra dall insisted that Gibson was a respon person, and wat he had eualresnionably the Sherman letter. ‘They called in the news- paper correspondent 1 am referring ta, a man celebrated for his cool judgment, and he said: “Gentlemen, with all respect to Mr, Givson, let him produce that Jeter before you pass your resolution.
