Kellogg, after the confidential clerk In the employ of Mr. John B. Lyou, the well-known merchant prince of the Board of Trade. Inasmuch as the dimensions and a fuil description of the style of build of the barges, ‘which are to constitute an innovation in the lumber trade of the future on Lake Mic igan, bas been given by THE TRIBUSE, & repetiton bere, in the crowd for space, is not necessary. About half-past 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon twomen were ohserved in close conversation on the north side of South Water street, near the corner of Franklin. They proved to be Richurd Powers, General President of the Chicago Beamen's Union, and a member of the Union Demed Patrick Wallnce. Speetal Dispatch to The Chicapn Tribune. CLEVELAND, O., May 14.—The steamship City of ftome was successfully lnunched tbis after- noon from Quayles’ shipyard. Sne was buiit for the Winslows, and s onc of the largest vessels ever launched on thelakes, Her dimenslous are as follows: Length of ke 68 feet; overall, 283 feet: beam, 40 feet; hold, 21 reet. The vessel 15 dingonally strapped. She bas four spars, all intended to carry salls, and hns also an extra number of hatches. Her machinery was constructed by the Cuynhoga Works. Her engines, two in number, are compound, the large cylinder belne sixty mnches in diameter, and the smaller onc thirty-two inches, with a forty-eight inch stroke. She has two boilers seventeen feet long and nine teet in dinmeter. The wheel is twelve feet, with four- teen and one-brlf feet lead. Her registered tonnage i3 1,008, Capt. B. S. Wolrin, who last season comnmanded the Raleigh, will 8afl thenaw vessel, Willlam Gregory being engincer. The vessel will cost when completed £125.000. MILWAUKEE, Wis., May H.—The tug Starke Brothera left for Chicago to-night with & dredge, accompanled by the H. F. Bues, which will act as teader during the progress of. the ork. Capt. Charles Herman to-day sold his two- thirds Interest in the fchooner Surprise to John Elser for 34,500, and Elser in turn disposed of the entire craft to H. M. Benjamin for £6,000. A survey held on the steam-barge Hilton to- day disclosed the fact that she filled through ber siphons, which were unprovided with stop- cocks. The oversight has been remedid.
