| THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: SUNDAY, MAY 8, 1881—EIGHTEEN PAGES MEXICO. - NE The Creat Paradise for Stock- Raisers on a Large Scale. Some Figures Showing the Magnitide of the Business, and Its Profits, Yesterday a TrmUxEreporter had a conversa- tion with Mr. Madison Calhoun, who nad just ar- rived from New Mexico, where, aga member of the firm of Calhoun & Edge, he is engaged in stock-ruising. Mr. Calhoun was enthusiastic over the prospects of his section of the great Southwest, and wus sanguine that there were fortunes in store for enterprising men, who ould go down there with a few thousand dol- Jars in. their pockets. “It is about six sears,” suid Mr. Calhoun, us he threw down bis sombrero and leaned back in his chair forun interview,” since [left Llinols, and after Jooking the Southwest over I concluded a couple of years ago that New Mexico was the ‘pest grazing country in the United States. I accordingly squatted upon some sixty thousand acres of unsurveyed Government land in Colfax County, New Mexico, about 150 miles suuth of thu Colorado line. “No, we eet the use of the land without cost- ing us 4 cent for rent or taxes, us it bas never deen placed on the market, the Government considering it worthless, It isn’t good fur any- thing cither, except for grazing purposes, and for this it is unsurpassed, and the stock raisers sake temporary possession without interference. » How large is our tract? “Weill, it isa block ten miles square, and, whut is something of a novelty in our business, is all fenced in. Our firm Was the first to introduce fencing into that country, and always before that it had been tne custom to allow the herds to roam iv all direc- tions, wounted herders being required to fol- low them. Now the cattle ure in pasture.and require little care. “What kind of fences do we use? Twenty- five miles of it is barbed-wire fence, the other fifteen miles 1s 1 continuous precipitous blutf, which isa natural barrier, answering our pur- e admirably. “The Great American Desert! Yes, that's what it’s put duwnon the mups. Lianos Esta- cados the Greasers call it, because in former days, before roads existed, travelers could only indicate the route of travel by driving stakes lone their line of march. It was a terror to all who had to traiel across its wateriess waste. Jus sons, 490 miles long by 250 miles wide, and jere £5 NOT A STREAM OF WATER over the whole area. Itisan elevated table land and favored with very little raiatall. Tho country right up to the edge of these Staked Plains is full of streams, but there is no water on the platen. “How do we get water? There's plenty of it tobebad for the boring, and artesian wells sield an abundant supply.” 1t is these that will make the whole of this American desert blossom BS ee Tose. “Yes, ll tell you why New Mexico has the over Colorado as 2 grazing region. It se our Winters ure so mucn milder. In New Mexico the herds find abundaut pusture all winter. Outof our herd of 1,$0U cattle we lost only four head, and these from no scarcity of food, while in Colorado the season was So severe that the losses were very beavy, the pastures being snowed under. Colorado used to be a tine grazing region, but it hus become overstocked. 4 Anzona is equally coud with New Mexico. “Yes, we do yet a few inches of snow occa- Honally , but it disappears inside of twenty-four jours. “Good shipping factlities, did you say? I should remark. The State is just gleaming with ate ruils, and we have outivts est to the Mis- sissippi Valley, south to the Gulf, west to the coust, and north to the mines of Colo- Mr. Calhoun snid he had figured out the prob- able result of a five years’ speculation on a rauch started with 15,000 head of cuttle, bused upon the natural increase during that period. He estimates that tifteen acres of land should be ullowed per head. The land, as already stated, does not require as yet to_be purchased, but is rent free to tirstcomers, Mr.Calboun’s calculus tons involved more mutbematics and mysteries of stock-raising than would interest the general reader, but the result is summurized as follow: RECEIPTS. ‘ Sales of steers... Did stock on hand Young stock on ban a Yen per cent added for improvement in young stock by cross-breeding. “Well. what's a ola Zachatitne © the matter now? Mr. Fish proceeded to Misbed Phraseology, m Uon clear to Mr. Caundle “Now, Senator, What shall we do? The Senator bi demanded ing the whole ques- rs mind, , What would you suggest? ‘ought down his ce: aA and said: “Do about it? Why, tell Be ou lady to go to the devil! THE DRUIDS. Centennial Celebration of the Organ- ization of the Order. Tho U. A. O. D., which is by interpretation the United Ancient Order of Druids, celebrated last nightin the North Side Turner-Hall the 100th anniversary of the reorganized Order. A couple of thousana yeurs ago there were Druids, who Wore garments of white, dwelt in groves, and Attended to the spiritual wants of the Ancient Britons, Apparently they were good fellows, for in the year 1781 2 club of young men in-Lon- don, England, made up their minds to calt themselves Druids and to form a bencyolent as- Weciation, which should take care of the sick, bury the dead, and relieve the widows and Orphans of members. From ° this be- sinning. came one the ~—_ most Successful of the benevolent secret Societies now in existence. In 183 the Order ‘Wasextended to this country, bat it did not flourish for the first few years.
