Something like o hitch has shown itself in the arrangement between the Board of Education and the First National Bauk for the leaseof the Haverly Theatre, or oid Post-Office property. ‘The appraisers appoluted to value the property bave fixed that of tho land at $1L,500 a foot for tho Dearborn strect frout, or $3H6500 for the whole lot, and that of the building at the extortionate firure of §45,000. Asthe buildmg covers but two-thirds of the aren of the lot, it is in tact an incumbrance for the bank, which would, if itused the present structure, lose e benefit of one-third the sum ivspent for the Jand. At their Iast mecting, the Board of Educstion reccived a communication from President Nickerson, of the First National Bank, proposing to buy the walls and all im- provements which shall remain after the re- moval by Mr. Haverly of whatever he is entitled .totake for the sum of $15,030 cush.and simul- taneously therewith to enter into a Satisfuctory bond to remove the old walls, and erect in the place thereof a modern first-clnss bullding, to cost not less than $300,000. The Bourd refected the offer. The bauk officers are informed that to remove the present structure they would have to puy $3.500, besides giving the contractor all the material in the bullding. Thes expected the appraised value of the land would not be more than $250,= stone-front dwellings, 50 by 67 and 57 feet re- spectively, 3228 and 3210 Wabush avenue, to cost §14,000; City of Chicago, rour-story and buse- ment School-bouse, 8 by 8¢ feet, 1269 to 1259 West Juckson street, to cost $10,00). f A curiosity in bullding in New York is”to be seeu in Eighty-sixth street, where a builder is vutting up some houses on u new plau: they will be the smallest ever erccted n that cley.
