Chleago One of the Ecnt NMarkets In the Country. ‘The nature and source of the fish supply of Chicago, and the extent of the interests in- volved in this business, are probably scareely understood by the general reader, who takes fish when it is set before him as a relief to the wearisome succession of roast beef, mutton, pork, and veal. Yesterday a re- porter of Tiz TRIBUNE spent some time among the fish-markets and interviewed several leading dealers on the subject. The substance of these interviews is embodied as follow: 3 “I'he principal supply of lake fish—white- fish and trout—is driwn at_present from_the eastern and western shores of Lake Michi- @an, Of river fish, pickerel and pereh are searce. pike plentiful. Of ite 5. Crop- pies, and other fish from the rivers in the Green Bay region, there is a good supply. Whitefish and trout are the staples, and are in demand. Thereis no loss on these fish, for if they eannot be sold at_once they ean'be smoked or salted, and in either shape command a ready sale. Of sea fish there is @« zood_supply of red- snappers trom the Gulf of Mexico, and of i, haddock, halibut, and mackerel from Toston aud New York. Shad from the Chesapeake and Potomac are moderately plentiful. Lake and river fish are cheap, and there seems to be a general expeetation that pri on ail kinds: will rule low. TLobsters are received from Boston, Portland, and New York, and are in good demand at 20) ta 25 cents per pound. A few California Salmon have been received and_ sold readily 2t mond prices, but the season for the Quebec and Kennebee varieties has hardly com- menced. It appears that tnis has not_been a good Lent for the fishmongers. Prices have ruled high that the observance of a piscine diet a qualification for sanctity has not been strictly adhered to. A leading dealer said that he would give move tor i May, June, and July than for all the rest o! the year, including Leni. In the very hot weather people take to fish as a Telief from the monotony of - a meat diet, and there is a steady trade all the time. The oyster season is as zood as over, and the succulent bivalve will rest quietly in his native bed until September cames around. with its fatal terminal **r.* His relative, the clam,—tough but toothisome —enjoys no such aifabetieal exemption from slangiiter. and is considered in season the y round. The Mayor Intends to Mash the Mashers. Extortionate Street-Cleaning Bids— Revoking Licenses. REVOKING LICENSES. The Mayor stated;yesterday that the li- censes which had been revoked recently did not work a very great hardship on the of- fenders. Butit was not his intention to al- low these parties to have licenses again an- other year for places -in other parts of the city. So far @s he was concerned, he as loath to restore any license revoked by im, at_the smmne time he wanted the police to exereist careand judgment in recommend- ing reopen for the same parties under an- other name the places he had closed, but he could not legally refuse a license 1f auother person claiming to be reputable and brinzing evidence to that effect applied fora saloon license, even though intending per- haps to open the smne place. These parties would not_now trouble themselves about ving their licenses restored, but thes might aoply, after the 1st of May, when saloon-lizenses come due, for new ones. He had notitied the City Clerk and City Collect- or not Lo grant these parties new lcenses, but the thing might be overlooked in the rush during May and June which was sure to come. ile (the Mayor) would not toler- ate these dives after they were brought to his notice by the police. STREET-CLEANING RIDS. The bids for cleaning the paved streets of the three divisions of the present dirt-nceu- mulations were opened yesterday morni by the Commission of Public Works. There were only six, and only one of these was anything like reasonable, and this was for cleaning the streets of the North Side at 554 amile. Mr. Waller said that he thought that this bid would be accepted, and the work over there commenced at once. So far as the other districts were concerned, the bids ranged from §19 a mile up, the - latter being the lowest for a portion of the West Side. ‘The Bridgzeport District would cost about 3277 a mile to clean up wider the bids anded in. Mr. Waller says that all these bids are too hizh, and that e will be compelled to advertise_over again. The trouble wits these people did not know what they were estimating upon. He did not think that there w s much_dirt wpon the streets as the contractors had imagined. e found that the great diflienity lay in not hav- ine a dumping-zround for the street dirt, and the dredzing firms had a monopoly of the cows Lo carry the dirt out into the iake, and wanted SE2 an hour for each scow used by the eity. This, of course, was exorbitaut and outrazeous, and he was endeavoring to find some remedy for the evil. DOWN WITIH TIE MASHERS.
