Spectat Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune, New York, Dec. 18.—The buoyancy in the stock market to-day was more marked than » on any previous day of the week, and avery | active business was transacted in all the jeading shares. The greatestadvance was in : Cnicago & Alton, Canada Southern, Texas Pacific, Kansas & Texas, the coal shares, and ! the Elevated Railroad stocks. The rise in the last-named formed a prominent feature of : the market. The only exception to the activ- | ity of the list was Western Union and Union Pacific, which resisted the upward in- fluence of other shares. There was nothing spasmodic about the upward movement, the advances being regu- Jar and steady. It was stated that the rise in Western Union yesterday was owing to the covering ot a large line of shorts. At the afternoon Board the bank statement caused asharp advance ina number of the speculative stocks, particularly on Kansas & ‘Texas and Pacific Mail. Western Union also gathered a little, while Erie seconds sold at par ex-interest, which is the HIGHEST PRICE THEY HAVE REACHED. At the close stocks were strong. The deal- ings in railroad bonds were simply enormous, and undera steady demand pricesmadea gen- erakadvance. The transactions in Chesapeake & Ohio bonds were larger than for some time past, and sales were made up to 7834 for series B, and to 473¢ for currency 6s. The ‘Texas Pacific bonds were also heavily traded in, with sales of Rio Grande Division firsts up to 9734, and Jand grant incomes to 775. Kansas & Texas firsts rose from 1134 to 113%, and seconds from %6% to 783g, under large purchases. Erie’ Consolidated new seconds were conspicuous,, and rose to 100, International & Great Northern second incomes rose to 92; Iron Mountain seconds preferred income to 10714; Lehigh & Wilkesbarre consol to 1053¢; Rome, Water- town & Ogdensburg firsts to 79; Hannibal & St. Joseph convertibles to 111; Canada | Southern firsts to 104; and Wabash general mortgage to 9534. Ohio Central incomes sold. at 593¢@60. St. Paul & Omaha consols con- tinued in demand, and were taken up to 105; Denver & Rio Grande firsts rose to 112; di consols to 111. Northwest consolidated 7s were up, 134, to 185. There was é AN ADVANCE OF TWO AND A HALF in New York, Pennsylvania & Ohio first in- come; 2 percent in Mobile & Ohio second debentures; % in Central Jowa firsts; 34 in Boston, Hartford & Erie firsts, Erie 5s funded, and St. Paul & Sioux City firsts; and Xin Indiana, Bloomington & Western in- come do firsts, and Milwaukee & St. Paul (La Crosse & Davenport Division) firsts. Northwest coupon gold bonds advanced 434 percent to 158, but later fell to 123; New York, Lake Erie & Western income 3 per cent, to 6; Peoria, Decatur & Evansville in- come 134, to 15}4. MONEY in the last hour lent as high as6 per cent and as low as8 per cent. Taking the day as a whole, the fair rate was 6 per cent, and the market was only moderately active. Tho closing quotations were 4@5 per cent. The weekly statement of the New York banks is favorable, the total reserve having been increased $2,483,100 ($1,744,000 specie and $738,500 legal-tender notes). Last weelk the banks lacked $83,200 of 225 per cent re- serve. A year ago the surplus reserve was only $1,856,650.. = WEEKLY REVIEW. To the Western Associated Press, New Yors, Dee. 18.—The Evening Ex press financial writer says in review of the week: Importations of gold from Europe were on anenormous scale, the arrivals for the week ended yesterday at the Assay-Offico being $6,151,400, all of which was foreign coin and bars. The total arrivals since Aug. 2 were $55,588,900, of which $5,769,600 was American coin, and $52,769,300 foreign coin and bars. The arrivals for the correspond- ing period last year were $72,743,650. Pay- ments by the Assay-Office on this account were $5,647,900 for the week, and $52,000,000 since Aug. 2. GOVERNMENT BONDS were generally steady on a quite active mar- ket, the quotations to-day showing no: appre- ciable change from those of Jast Saturday. State bonds were strong early in the week, but subsequently some reaction was re- corded in many cases. RAILROAD BONDS active and buoyant, and asa rule followed more or less closely the course of their kin- dred shares in the stock market. All invest- ment issues advanced sharply, and formerly low-priced bonds, in which by far the largest transactions took place, shared in improving prices. Nearly all the income, jJand-grant, and debenture bonds on thelist were in brisk demand and figured largely in the transac- tions. Railway and miscellaneous specula- tion throughout the week was characterized by great activity and unusually buoyant feel- ing. The upward movement began to make progress at the very opening, and continued with more or less vigor to the close to-day, when in many cases THE HIGHEST QUOTATIONS EVER KNOWN were current. The advance in prices for the week ranged from 234 to 20 per cent, the improvement in most of the active shares having been generally from 4 to 10 per cent, ‘The general causes at work to produce the remarkable buoyancy of the week were the heavy arrivals of gold from Europe, easier ;
