Auctioneers, creased demand for dwellings, and ex- tensive building enterprises to meet this want are in progress.. At New York, as Is natural, the prosperity of the real-estate mar- Ket ig more pronounced than elsewhere. New York has many old fortuges, which are continu- ally putting their surplus income back into real estate, which cannot be watered, nor confiscated by Directors, nor stolen. In New York, during the last year. there have been very few fur- nished or unfurnished houses to let,—fewer this fallthanat sny corresponding season for ten yeurs back. The fuct is, people can afford to live in their own houses as things are now. Property in general, too, is held :much firmer Uhan ithas been at any time in the lust six cars. There is a great demand for property. Sire hove ane being built, Never in uny year Before hive so_oiny buildings gone up in New York City.—good’ buildings, that bring high prives and high rents. The dealers declare that siuce list year there has been a constant rise, and property has almost doubled in value within the lnst sixteen months. A great deal of prop- is building. There is no difiiculty in get- Uz purchasers, for lots and houses are sold as Buon us they are finisbed. in Hurlem and York- ville you can hardly tinda block in which houses ure not going up. ‘There is scarcely a vacant square east of Third xvenue in which property: fs not building. Capital is now willing to help Juilders ton remarkable degree. Plans are now being made in Chicago for an unusual amount of building next year. The transformation cence now in progress on Wabish avenue, on North State street, and on West Madison street 4s 2 foretaste of the activity to be expected next. seunon. The city is now crowded. People are coming in trom all quarters to live here and engage in business. A gentleman who adver- lised a tat to rent states that four of the seven applicants who responded were business men in ewualler cities about Chicago who bad deter- mined to move into Chicago. where they could do all they did in their towns, and a good deal more. His experience fs that of every one who has had stores or dweilings to rent. Our borels ure overflowing, and plans are already being dis- cussed for the erection of more of the monster exravansaries. Chicao could easily support more than one of the family hotels which have become so popular in Baston, New York, and other Eustern cities. The fate oiticial publica- tion of the pupulation of Chicazo, 503053, shows that since 387) the number of_in- babitants has more than'doubled. Hyde Park bas done_ still better, having increased from 86H in 160 to 15.716 in 188. There ig’ every Teason to believe that this rate of increase will be exceeded in the next decade, and thut in 1890 Chicago will have more than 1,000.0) inhabitants. The last ten yours huve been yeurs of calamity for Chicago: tire and panic are not likely to ré- peat themscives, und cupital is consequently Deginning to tiow into Chicago property with snore contidence than at any previous time. Curroll avenue propertr-owners are petition- ing the Common Council€for side approaches Tron that strect to the Sangamon street viaduct. An experimental elevated railroad is to be built in Dearborn Park, permission for that pur- pose having been given by the city authorities. It will be put up by the Leavitt Elevated Railroad Company. The tracks are to be clevated to the bignt of eighteen feet, supported by iron columms, aud the cars run on the top for rapid transit, while others, going more slowly, are to be suspended by braces about midway and putted stong by wire cables. ‘The W est Side Street Railway bas been given by the Common Council contro! of Luke street for all street railway purposes from Union Park over the bridge to Michigan avenue, and from the present terminus of the Company's trucks at Rockwell street in and along Lake street -to Central Park; andof Milwaukee avenue from the present tracks at the intersection of Clinton sireetto Luke street, toa connection with the West Lake street tracks. , Mayor Hurrison hus not vet made public _his intentions with regard to Signing the Dill. It 1s stipulated, however, that ibe work be performed under the ervision of the Depurtmentof Public Works. ‘he West Madison stroet property-owners are protesting aginst the frauds being committed in the laying of the pavement on that street. They nllere that Inspector Dewey was removed from the street because he did uot favor the cuntractors, and objected to fueflicient work. Gentlemen who bad wnited on Superintendent Fogurty got no satisfaction from him. Cedar blocks that were rotten were said to have been rejected only when objected to by some owner on whose frontage they were laid, and tho samo. blocks were put down on another part of the en no one was watching. Itis said the it of Loomis is paved almost entirely with these worthless blocks. Legal measures are to be taken to prevent the contractors from reveiviug their pay.
