/ THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1880—SIXTEEN PAGES SPORTING A Conservative’s Views on Base-Ball Innova- tions. The Twenty-Mile Race—A Variety of News for Horsemen. BASE-BALL, INN VATIONS. ‘mo the Faitor of The Chicago Tribune. cmicaco, Oct. 23.—Now shat base-ball is trans- tered froin tho field to the fireside, permit a fermen of tho game to open the season of dis- rou gnd of proposed innovation. The sub- qof’of innovations is one that interests the <e-bell patron very much, but is also one on feb be is very conservative. When, for in- ts tro years ago it was Suggested that the ‘eit on bases at the end of any inning should occuPpSy at the beginning of the next wing, the bases on which they were left, in- ehigent patrons of the game regarded the sug- sion of the new idea as anidiot’s. It was q ori plain that such u chunze would make the Pte tedious, multiply indetiuitly the catchers’ work. and steadily diminish the chances of the Faker clubs, thereby diminishing the uncer- qinty which ts one of the most pleasing feat- nresof the gumne. ‘The main features of baze-ball may now be ed as irrevocably settled. Thus, no one gerously talks of increasing or diminishing the qumber of players, the distance between buses, grihe outstoan inning: but the war between plcher and batsmen is ever a fruitful subject for the innovator and the baseball legislator. Feta little cool consideration will shuw that even in Ditching and batting there is not_much Som for cbunge, and that the wisdom: of auy Bunge is very doubitul. What fs it that always {ums out the neitrtiest applause? Ditlicult Mngseleverly done. ‘This is true of buse-ball asit is true of everything else, and is a truth always to be borue in mind by those who would frany way attract the public. A bal! gently tossed brings out no skillon the part of either piteber, batsinan, Or cxteber. A long hit bas in ef ttle interest. It ig the circum- ances under which it is made that puke it interesting. Dalrymple’s decisive ywo-base bit in the botly-contested but light patting game between Chicago and Providence pathe sthOf July last gave to 6,0u) spectators a fpr of intense pleasure, while the twenty odd. fuse hits to a side in a genuine “circus” aro spore often greeted with derisive laughter than rithaoy other expression of feeling. "It is true that neavy-butting gumes are very interesting; fut light-batting juimes are equaliy su. Neither very interesting unless the issue of to iS at Limes mm suspense. An illustrative Hample of cach: In one of tho closing games feween Chiengo and Hartford, in 1876, spaiding, shy pliched for the Chicagos, was batted in the Yrtinning all over the ficld for a total af eight mecs. Interest in the gume at ance tagged, recause the spectators regurded that first in- ting ag @ getter. But Spulding now braced up, mid the batting of the Hartfords was light dur- the rest of the gutne, while the Chicagos, jelding superbly all the time and picking up & unortwo in each inning during the first hulf if the game, inatly struck a tremendous see in butting, and won the gume fand- omely. It proved to bean excepdonably in- eresting game, because from the moment that he spectators bad any hope of the Chicagos rinniug, the very thought of their pulling so yrhil & game out of the fire aruused tho rarmest enithusiusin. and the bit which tied tha yame cauzed a frenzy of appinuse. A light-batring gume, arousing the utmost in- verest. wus Ube tirst one between Chicago and Milwaukee, at Chicago, in 1878. 1t was x brill- ‘ut fielding game, in suspense until the last nan Was out, nud resulted in the Chicagzos rhitewashing their opponents, with only one or wo ruus tor themselves. Many epectators de~ dured it was the most interesting gume that bey bad cver seen, ‘As pitching and batting now are, we have a rariety in base-ball. If the average of base aité per game is pow ligt, there are ull numer- ius gaines where the batting is heavy, Witness 1 Cuieago-Cincinnati game last spring, when White was batted out of his position iu one inn- mg; witness a Chicazo-Cleveland gaiwe at Chi- sagn lust spring. when both sides butted beavily ind which Chteago won after their opponcats aad n jead of six runs; witness many other League guines here and elsewhere. We shane that will diminish variety; we 20 change that will call for diminished nervy wd skill in pitcher, entcher, or buts- nan; We Want no change that will put the Jump-hit dutfer on an equality with Datrymple and Gore: we want no change that will increase the nuinber of buses on bails—a febure which we tolerate only asa necessary evilz and, tually, we want no Hat bats, cork balls. or other thing that will unsettle the present standurds of skfil aud of reugunnble calculation.
