BASE-BALL. The. Chicago Team Victorious in the League Championship Contest. A Tie Game. Yesterday with the Cincinnatis Ended by Darkness. Brovidence Beaten by Boston, ‘Worces- ter by Troy, and Buffalo by » Cleveland. THE CHAMPIONSHIP. ‘The right to fly the League championship pen- nant for 188i has been settled during the past week in’ favor of Chicago, that team having won eixty games,or five more than it will be possible forits next nearest competitor, Provi- dence, to win. The’ latter bas the, best chance Jor second place, though Cleveland, by winning ell its remaining games, might secure the posi- tion. Troy has lost all chance tor third place through its defeats at the hands of Worcester, and must now ook sharp for fourth, as Boston 4s but one game behind, and is playing an un- commonly strong game. Worcester can now hardly hope to be better than sixth, and Buffalo end Cincinnati will fetch up the rear in the or- der named. The rain just prior to the game and the threatening clouds kept down the attend- ance, a8 it seemed morally certain the game could not be played. The wetting was, however, delayed, and eight innings were played, when darkness compelled the cessation of play, and the ecore was left ata tie. Chicago opened brilliantly at the bat, one three-bagger and four eingles earning three out of the four runs scored in the first inning. -For a time Purcell proved “pie” for the home team, who hit him again for an earned run in the second inning, ‘Dut for the ensuing six innings he held them down tothree hits and no runs. Kelly went in to catch in the third inning, and on two passed balls, a wild pitch, and a wild throw-in by Dalrymple, two unearned runs were scored off one safe hit. . In the fifth, two passed balls let in another unearned run, and in the eighth Angon’s failure to get aball coming on the bound from Kelly, who had returned to third base, together with another poor throw-in by Dalrymple, let in twounearnedruns and tied the score. The ninthinning opened witha single by Dalrymple and a three-baser by Gore, and then the Cincinnatis, by bad play, purposely de- dayed the game in order to carry it into the darkness. Four runs resulted for Chicago, and before the side was out the umpire called game, thescore standing asit was atthe endof the eighth inning—5to5. It is presumed the game ‘will be played off to-morrow afternoon. Play should hereafter be called at3 o'clock, in order to make sure of daylight all through. It is said that Bancrofthas carried the Worces- ter’s through the season without touching their $5,000 capital” i There fs some talk of & unfon between Troy and Albany for the purpose of: maintaining a League team next year. A member of the Buffalo team was recently dod $50. They were to have played a retorn game in Chieago last Tuesday, ‘bir falled to ut in an appearance, preferring, it is sup) to forfeit the game to the Frank- ins rather than run the risk of another defeat.
