Datails of tho Quarrol—Tts Status and Possible Effeot on the Campaign, speetat Correapondence of The Chicago Tribune. «Conus, O., Aug. 2.—Ir a letter tons: Trmenk, written before the Democratic State Convention nt Cleveland, Igave some detalls of an Inner fight being waged among tho would-be State Tenders of that party for the controlling power 11 the coming cam- ain. Iintinated, then that the results of {hat convention woukl not determing this fhty and the sequence has justified my proplicey, for the struggle still continues, and ielikely to continue for some thine longer, tu the detriment of Democratic prospects, Bearing in mind tho Seriptural allegation, that a house divided qgalnst itself cannot stand, L have watched with Interest the prog- ress of this struggle, which threatens so to engross the attention of those In whose hands the conduct of the Democratic eampntgn has been placed as to minke thelr Jabors tn this Jatter direction of but little effect; and, for -the benefit of readers of Tre Trinuny, will deyote this letter to an explanation of the fight, its present status, and the effect it will {ndlrectly have npon the campaign in Obio. “JOUNGKE” THOMPSON, Jn. tho Jetter I have alluded to above, I spoke of the Hon. Jolin G. Thompson and nly status 1 Ohio polltics, and gave sume of the reasons why he happened td be placed in the position of a disturber of Demieratle pence, and tho object against whom the bit- ter warfare I t of was directed. As the present fight iv tl: same old one agninst him, alittle repetition here may not be out of place, Thompson has long been one of tho principal figures In the Ohlo political arena, As right-hand man to Senator Allen G, Tinrman, Thompson, while contributing much to the political elevation of the Intter, alse himself Into power and distinction, Asiong as Thurman’s course was upward, Thompson's star was Nkewlse In the ns- eendant; and, like a kite and its tall, they salled away into the bine empyrean of polit- feal power and honor, to be gazed nt with wonder and admiration by the niultitude who stool with upturned faces watehing their progress. ‘I'his triumph of the Co, of Thompson and ‘Thurinan lasted for sonia tine; but, Wke all triumphs, political or other, {t could not last, for slway, as ‘it brought out into too = prominent view the = principal parties —con- cerned, it Hkewlse exelted the onslaughts of enylous competitors, To continue the simile of the kite and Its tall, however, they suared far above ull attacks fora consider able time; but finally, injured by one of the nisstles thrown, the Tharinan kite began to sink, and, as usual, the tail, which had b fts steadfer and supporter in its upward course, now by its welght accelerated its lownfall. ‘Thurman, falling, was dragged downwards stil] faster by tis assocjatlon and connection with Thompson, In fact, ‘Thomp- son was inade the medium through which Thurman could be intured, until it finally seemed to many ag If Thompson alono were the object of attack, and) ‘Thurman wn fortunate In being connected with him. And here the situation grew more complicated, for the short-sighted ones among ‘Thurman's frlends allied themselves: against Thompson wit the personal encmies of the Intter, and with the anti-Thurman men who waged war upon the Senator through his henchman, p to the time of the commencement of ‘Thurman's declining from power, ‘Thompson had been tho “boss” in Ohio polities, For Years, ns Chairman of the State Committee, ie had organized the campaigns, and dis {ributedany emoulments Accriulng froma suc- cessful tight; and hence he was soon sur- rounded with a galaxy of time-servers and placemen, who fought hisbattlesand held him npower. Asa clique of any kind ts always gure to draw ont an opposing on this Thompson clique drew ont an’ antl-Thomp- gon faction very early Inthe reign of Jolingee, ¥ ch owiny g tothe shrewdness and able muantp- ulation of the latter, they were unable to overthrow hhn, But, when this antl-Thomp- son crowd was reinforced by a certain ele. ment who, either beeause of personal hostility to Senator ‘Thurman, or because of thelr destre to see some one elsa share In the politica! honors he was taking all to hiniself, Opposed the Senator, then the fight began to turn against Thompson. JOUNGEE DEPOSED, Fora long time, however, although tt was confidently asserted that each comme bout Would see Thompson downed, his supertor factles saved him, and {t wis not until tho convention of 187 that he recelved what was Supposed to be his mortal blow. In thatcon- Yention tho Thompson men wore in the op- sition against the renomination of Gov, Ishop; but 1¢ had not beon « lily Ted Who their candidate was to be,—whether it Would be Senator Thurinan himgolf ar acan- dldate aeceptabloto'Thurman, ‘Tho Senator, Jowever, at the last moment refused to make io mes, and Gen. My ex-Clerk of the vont and a prominent newspaper-correspondent, who far years hi fought Thompson. ‘To hin eames ees and entered Into a truce and an ale lines, Myers was to cease his opposition to. ‘Thompson, aud the latter would help tin to the Scoretaryallp. "Thompson apparently kept faith with Myers, but somehow or other the latter wna’ defeated for tho place, and Clark Irvine, a well-known, fkwipaat min, fal it, Paige pat nothing but na phice on the ‘onmiltice uid the Chilrinanship of the sub Finance Committee. HOW THF FIOMT GORS, Thus there were three opposing factions represented in the Committee,—the Palge- Armstrong crowd, tho MeKinney gang, and the ‘Thoinpson faction,—amt these have been devoting. perhaps one-fifth of th ilnie to the work of the campaten, aml fone-fifths to thelr Individual plotting for the upner hand, Itepresentatives of each of the factions have been East, and each fins tried to convinces the National Committee that the fight waa safest In thelr hands, ‘Thompson in the incantiing was working things quietly: aud by an nudaclous move,—a sorbof coup Pétat, =n week ago, succected In almost getting entire control of the Committee, Ty a well-planned scheme, ho had the Com- mitles enlarged; and, by working on the Me- Kinney faction, which ts fealty of Paige's Browhine power, had himself and Irvine, the Secretary, made members of the Committe Then another member was added in the per- son of Col. O'Brien, and the Intest move in the gnine was complete, After this plece of strategy Thompson hied him to Washington to awalt developments. And just here the fight rests for the pres- ent, though this week ‘it Is to be renewed, and a final effort made to get control. Tt has now narrowed down ton fight between the Thompson clique and the Palge-Armstrong faction, Armstrong is on the Natlonal Com- mittee, aut Paige lins the countenance of Barnum, Chatrnian of that Committee, who doesn’t like either MeKinney or ‘Thome son, Paige ean count three members of. the Executive Committee with bhn in his fight, On the-other hand, Thompson hig Me- Kinney and three other members of the Com- mittee with him; and the only question now fs, which sideO"Brien willlake, If he goes with Palge, it wil make a deadlock in the Com- mittee; while, If he sides with Thompson (which fs most Hkely), it means Thompson on tho top of the heap aguin, The next meeting of the Committee, on Friday, will decide the point, and in tho meantine the Paige men will bring every Influence possible to bear on O'Brien to get him with them, THE PRINCIPAL INCENTIVE to the keeping-tp of this quarrel 1s sald to bo in the fact that It Is expected that n bar’)? isto be opened in Ohio this fall, and the struggle is to see who will be the taster, I have it on pretty good authority that Bar- num would sooner see it drain through the hands of Paige than of either Thompson or Meklnnoy, because It would thon be directed ina new chanel; whereas, If either of the othars were at the faucet, the stream would be turned in the direction of their own camp. followers, who for years past have swailowod all that has been to be had. Jt would appear as if MeKinne: nominally the head of the Cominltt reality yery little to say in its manny By dextrous work ‘Thompson has sue in wetting almost all tho minor positions around the Committee-rooms filled by his own men, and the Chairman has been un- able to prevent It, . “118 AN ILL WIND,” ETC. The truth of the above trite aphorisin ts shown fn this inier quarrel among the Den- oerats, While they are fighting’ over who shall direct things In the catupnlen thoy are doing but little towards making that enin- palet, effeetive,—all of which eonduces to tepublican suecess. Democrats who ean see how things are going lovk on in sorrow, but are powerless to aet, ‘The Comittee inuat have Its fight out; but whether it will have it out and yet settled down to business iu time to do any good, fs doubtful, Af ‘Thompson ig defeated in the contest, it Is not probable that elther he or his friends will get over their chagrin In time to be of much service In’ the campaign; while, If Palge is sqnelehed, the same old gang will ruls the roost, to the disgust of that element inthe party which hasbeen wanting a change of hosses for years past, * ‘Thus It wlll bo seen that, taking hold of elther horn of the dileina, the Demoerats aro {na bad fix; and yet they must take one or the other, for 1 compromise appears to be out of the question, EE, EVANSTON’S PET JOY. for Now Fog-Horn and Its Possibili- tow The good people of the quiet Iittle suburb of Evanston are to be congratulated, Step by step the town has risen in degrees of beauty and importance, until now it may fairly be said to have reached a zenith never to be attained by any other place of Its Kizo and heft in the country, First It got Jlower- gurdons, hay-fever, and a fountains then ae Mght-house, a rnilway-depot, and a police forea; then gradually worked Itself tnto the proud possession of a university, 0 law of al- coholic prohibition, and on omnibus; and finally worked itself up Into belng tho blont- ed owner of. threo hotels, n jail, and fn water-works, with frequent Justices of the Penea and nv billiard saloon, to make things cheerful and neat.
