New York Sun, ‘The following edvertiscment appeared in yes-- terday’s Sun: Wanten-3 MEN, FOR FREE Passat England, JOHN BARANDUN 1 Cogn ee When Mr. Barandon was asked by a reporter what this advertisement meant, he repliod: “Why, this is not the first time such an adver- tisement has appeared in the Sun. We haye sent home thousands of Englishmen, Germans, Frenchmen, and others in this way. We put them through tree to guy part of awe old coun- try, and yel not exactly for po! . You see. we need them to take cure of the live cattle which the Company | represent ure shipping to England. Of course we don't need such 4 num ber of men on the return voyage, and so about. two years ago we hit upon this plan. We never have any trouble in getting all the men we want. OLEARY’S BIG SCHEME. ‘Tho famous Chicago champion has met with success in the several tournaments given in other clties, but réturas to Chicago to carry out his pet scheme, which {s a grand test race be~ tween men and horses In & continuous “go-as- you-please" race of 166 hours. ‘The most gen- erous propositions made to O'Leary to bring this race off in come of tho Eastern cities have becn declined, aud his invariable reply has been that the'purse is suflicient ($4,000) to insuro a good field of competitors, both horses and men, any- where, and he thinks that the people of Chicago appreciate a great event as well as others. Judging from comments fn the coming race in the Eastern papers, opinions as to the endurance f horses Opposed to men appears to be well aivided, sone claiming that the quadruped will outfoot the biped, while others, who cite ex- ampies, secm to be as firmly convinced that the men will outiast the aminals. Tho test cannot fail but to prove of interest, as it has been a question of much argument both here and abroad whether tho: remarkable performances of ‘pedestrians can be equaled or excelled by - any metnber of the brute creation. The care of and nourishment given to the horses in this race will be {teins Of no small interest to those de- pendisg on their service, while the necessarily experimental course pursued will be closely watched by both military and civil exports. ‘The race is hot horses agamst men, but de- tween men und horses,—I. e., each horse and cach gaan Is aul Jndividual entry, and exch, wl strive for such prizes as it may be in his or 0) to ov! ti The purse of $£,000 is divided as follows: $2,003 to first, $1,000 to second, $500 to third, $250 to fourth, $150 to fifth, and $100 to sixth. Grant and WeDonald—'The Alleged Vio- intion of Neutrality on the Mexican Border... 5-4, Spectat Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune, Wasnrvetos, D..C., Aug. 14.—A personal friend of Gen. Grant says that the Iatter does not intend to take any notice of John Me- Donald’s Whisky-Ring exposures, and that all of Grant’s friends are of the opinion that ng attention should be paid to them. Gen. Poe, of Gen. Sherman’s staff, who Was appointed to appraiso the Fort Gratiot military reservation with some other officers, has returned, and has fixed the price at $28,000. The Northwestern Railroad Com- pany has signified its intention of accepting the terms of the appraisement, and notified the Department that the money will be paid ina few days. ‘The business of the Indian Office is some- what embarrassed by the resignation to-day of Chief-Clerk Brooks, who, it is said, de- sires to look after his jnterests.in the manu- facture of wood-pulp. Owing to the illness of Commissioner Trowbridge Mr. Brooks has Been acting Commissioner, and, as Sec- retary Schurz is away, the retirement of Mr. Brooks at this time will leave the subordi- nate officials in charge of tho Department with rather more business than they can manage. . 1 ‘The State Department has commenced a thorough investigation of the recent alleged lation of the neutrality laws by Mexico, in ing protection to prisoners escaped from New Laredo, Texas. ‘The first step was to call upon the United States Consul at Lare- do, Mexico, to investigate the inatter, and to report fully, and to also obtain from the War Departinent any reports which may have been made by army officers on the border and in the vicinity. Secretary-of-War Ram: gave the necessary instructions, and 2 ini lary report in the ‘ease is expected the com- ing week. The State Department is also in correspondance with Judge Morgan, our Minister to Mexico, and the fatter has already Sent full dispatches to this Government which, however, it is not considered at the presenttime prudent to take public. It is known, however, that Judge Morgan has called the attention of the Mexican Govern- Ment tothe matter, and has been assured by that Government that the protection given to the escaped prisoners was not by the Mexi- ¢an authorities, nor with their sanction or knowledge, and that the Mexican Govern- ment had the inatter. exit nothing to do with Our officials are inclined to adopt this view, and to belicye that there Is nothing in the facts to indicate that the Mexican ‘Govern. gent has violated the Guadaloupe-Hidalzo reaty, The State Department officials, referring to the numerous reports that there is ill-feelin on the Mexican border between the United States and the Mexicans, state the -reports were exaggerated, and that so far as any- thing was officially known the relations be- tween the two Governments are now of the most friendly character, and that there is not likely to be any trouble. The Mexicans, in all their communications and intercourse with our Government, have indicated their desire to act in accordance with international ey and the ates Sica reyious to leaving for Windsor, Vt, the Secretary of State concluded. his examina- tion of the recent alleged insults to American. vessels in Spanish waters, and addressed a coinmunication to the Spanish Government. - $< * Young ladies who delight in fair, fresh faces use Cuticura Medicinal Soay AMUSEMENTS, HERSHEY MUSIC-HALL.
