New Yon, July 31.—The opening was attend- ed with little animation, and during the fore- noon dealings were light and prices wore al- lowod to drop off. Towards noon, just a5 every onc had begin to look for a declining close to the week's trading, there came in orders to buy, which gave animation end great streagth to the whole lst. The buying from this point on was conducted with contidence, and especially in St,. Paul, which leads the advance for the day. Northwest was notably stiff, and St. Paul ¢ Omaha was actively manipulated, with great steadiness throughout. It was reported eatly in the day that Gould bhd been selling o great many stocks, but by others itis held that bewillremain bull until he bas successfully completed his deals in Western Union, the Den- ver & Pacific stocks, and bis Missouri Pacitio, which will before long be listed under the reor- ganization with the Kansas & Texas. ‘The situation remaina unchanged. There are noadverse rumors. The roads are doing well, crops will be heavy, and a few heavy men have the market in their own hands. The day’s trading presented little to be particularized. There was some trading to square up longer futures in wheat and pork, which the parties did not cure to carry over Sunday, and also some tiling in of August shorts, in preparation for the deliveries of Monday. Not very much of the latter, as the August deals -scemed to have been pretty well squared up previocsly, leaving the work to concentrate more decidedly on Sep- tember, with a growing interest in subsequent months. The foreiga news was less favorable. to strength in wheat, a scarcity of vessel-room helped fo make corn tame. and a genera) sease of hbelplesness made provision operators un- certain which way to act, for which reason many of them did got act at all. Rye was weakened by the fact of lurgér receipts than were expected, and some of the shorts ab- stuined from filling at a decline of 2c, thinking that the situation warranted a greater break. Barley is dull. The barley quotations havebeen Utule better than nominal for weeks past, and at some times may bave been wide of the truth. We note that a couple of car-loads of No.2sold at Toe lust Friday off the Board. Messpork closed 2%c lower, at $15.874:@15.70 tor September and $15.40@15.421 for October. Lard clused5c lower, at $7.25 seller August and $7.30G7.22% for Sep- tember. Short ribs closed at $7.2%@7.25 for September. Spring wheat closed 14@13j¢ lower, at 832¢ for August and &{cforSeptember. Red winter.closed at (2c asked for August. Corn closed a shade tirmer, at 363 for spot and a5sie for September. Oats closed easier, at 23¢ for cash and 2%¢c for August, Rye declined 3@4e for cash, cloaing at ‘0c, and August at 6540. Barléy was dull at 4c for Septembor, and about ic spot No.2. Hogs were less active, and closed easy at $4.50@4.85 for light, and at $4.40@5.00 for heavy. Cattle wero steady ut $2.60@4.75 for poor to extra. There Was a fair movement in staple and fancy dry goods and a nominally steady set of prices. Boots and shoes met with a restricted demand only, this being the dull seuson with dealers in fuot wear. Prices were steadily held. Jcbbers of groceries were pretty busy, the de- mand from the country and city trade continu- ing good. Sugars, coffees, teas, rice, and most other lines were firmly held. No changes werere- ported in the dried-fruit and fish markets. Butter continued in good request, and was quoted firm, the supply being light. The de- mand for cheese showed little or no improve- ment, and previous prices were barely sustained. in the market for oils, paints, and colors no changes were noted. Pig-iron was firm. The dqmand is improving, and dealers look foran advance a litte further along in the sexson. Lumber was steady at the yards and fairly active. The cargo offerings were small, and soon sold out. Woolwasin fair request at un- changed prices. The stock is light, but suit- cient to keep the market amply supplied. The sales of seeds were lizht. Hay was steady, with a good demand for old, very little of which. was to be had, however, and most of the new arrived in bud condition. Hides were steady, and broom-corn slow and weak. The sales of poultry were light at re- duced prices, the heavy stock having demornl- ized the murket. Green fruits were also lower, asa result of big offerings of native varicties, and a good deal of poor fruit was on the street. Luke freights were firmer, closing at 4c for corn to Buffalo, and 10c for wheat to Kingston. PROVISIONS. .- HOG PRODUCTS—Were slow, except in changes from one month to another, and ruled steadier. Pork advanced early, near deliveries fell back Juter, while the longer futures closed higher. Lard and meats were quoted firmer early, in symputhy with pork, but closed lower, except green bums, which were aout He better. There was little chunge in the tone of advices ftom other points, und not much Mife in the tmde here.
