THE NEW CIVILIZATION. ‘To the Editor of The Chicago Tribune, Crtcaao, June 12.—Permit me to call your at- tention and that of your readers to a new school of “Social Economists,” which, under the able Jendership of Mr, Peter Papin, formerly of France but now of this city, is being practically fllustrated in the formation of various codperat- industrial companies, under the auspices of ‘The Cooperative Industries Improvement and ‘Trust Company,” of which Mr. Papin is Presi- Geut, Jutely organized In this city. A call was recently issued to a seloct number by Madame es, 20x30, to” Derby, of Nu. 46 Ada street, who has been chosen. by Mr. Papin as business manuger, for a meeting on the 9th inst. at her “dressmaking parlors,” to take into consideration the forma- tion of a “ Ladies’ Cooperative Dreasmaking Company” under his equitable codperative sys- tem. ‘The parlors were filled with ladies and gentle- men at an early hour, who listened wit muctt Interest toa very able_paper on “Social Econ- omy,—the Old and the New,” by Mrs. Sarib M. Mills, which will soon be ptinted in pamphlet form, forming the commencement of a series of literature on the same topic. Mrs. Mills is the Indy whose paper on “ The Relations of Labor and Melee? Tread before the Chicago Philo- sophical Society at the close of its first winter's sessions, was received with much enthusiasm ‘and was pronounced by its Executive Board and 45 sble President, the late lamented Prof. Jo- seph Haven, to be the richest paper of the sen- son. The Rey, H. W. Thomas, Myron Decker, and other prominent men and women, sent re- grets for not being able to be present and assur- ances of their aid and sympathy in the under- taking. It {s proposed to make.the Company 8 triumphant success by enlisting as many ws pos- sible ot our first and most fushionable ladies in the enterprise, while it expectsto give remuner- ative employment and a share in the profits ac- cording to wages carned to 500 workingwomen. ‘The Association offers to capital a safe invest- ment at 8 per cent interest and a share in the protits according to interest paid, which de- iermines the value of the services it renders and the same advantages tointelligence or man- agement. Thus giving to these three equal fuctors—intelligence, labor, and capital—an uitable share in the profits of the business to whose success they huve contributed. “The Ludies’ Codperative Dressmaking Com- any” will bave for its business manager Mme Berbr. one of the most competent and efficient miodistes of our elty, whose patrons are among the first and must fashionable of our ladies, many of whom promise to take an active inter- est A the enterprise. The capital stock is $125,000, in shares of $°5 each. One hundred shares will be put upon the market as soon ag the organizution is perfected, $10 on each share ‘w bo paid down and the balance in installments, to be determined by the Board of Directors. This will give a working capital of $10.000 with which to commence immediate operations. Other advan- tuges will be secured to the Company, enabling the workingwomen to own homes and shares in 2 codperative store. Dressmaking materials of the richest and best qualities, and all other goods necessary to the business. will be sold to the shareholders at wholesale prices. A factory, with all modern conveniences, will be immedi- ately built at, “The Codperative City of the Codperative Industries Improvement and ‘Trust Company,” where, some nine mites from South ‘Chicago,’ preparations are go! forward to immediately facili- tute the building of factories and cottage-homes for the operatives in the various companies now forming under the auspices of the parent Com- ANY. is "The next meeting will be held at the head- quurters of the C. I. I. & T.Co., 100 South Frank- lin street. near Washington, in its lecture-room, —whick will comfortably sext 350 persons,—on Wednesduy, the 16th inst., at 8 o'clock p. m., to which all are invited.
