G.3L WILSON, Cashier. BY TELEGRAPH. NEW TORK. Spectal Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune, New Yons, May 1.—The market opencd with considerable strength this morning, and it was evident that the heavy operators were endcay- oring to shake out the smeler bears. There was a general rush to cover and forthe time being a bull feeling, aided by anticipation of a favar- able bank statement. Before thishad appeared, however, the heuvy buyers of yesterday had fed the market with stock enough to create a con- siderable decline. When the statement ap- Peared it was found to be very favorable, a gain of $1,000,000 in reserve, notwithstanding the increase in loans of 2 million anda half. ‘This induced fresh buying, but within an hour the guin was lost, and the list was on the aown- Yardturn. From this on to the close, there was asteady decline, and finally a weak close. Money has ceased to bea fuctor inthe market, which isevidently on the declining course, that will continue for some time to come. Granger stocks, it is predicted, will be lower next week, and of course the general list. It is probable the June interest on Erie seconds will be Promptly met. Live boss, Catile, No. 4501 The leading produce markets were less active Saturday, and irrevularly easier on grain, with decided weakness in provisions. ‘The latter were dull. A great deal of the trading had reference to the May delivéries, which in the morning were smallin wheat and large in pork. The British telerrams were somewhat conflicting, privates culling wheat weak, while Beerbobm reported greater business on the part of hold- ers, with an advance in cargoes off coast. fess pork closed 734¢ lower, at $9.92%4@9.95 seller May and $10.05@10.07% for June. Cattle were firm at $3.00@4.8 for common to extra. ‘The dry goods market was without marked new features. The demand, though less active than a fortnight ago, is better than usual for the time of year, and jobbers scem well pleased with the general situation. Prices rule fairly steady. Groceries met with a generous demand, and ruled firm. Boots and shoes were Steady. The millinery and straw goods trade continues active. Jobbers of dried fruits and canned goods report a liberal demand from the country trade and a fair local inquiry, at sustained prices. Butter and cheese were mov- ing with come freedom, and the prices current earlier in the week were-being realized. No changes were apparent in oils, paints and col- ors, pig-tron, leather, and coal. ‘The cargo lumber market was dull Saturday andeasy. At the yards trade was only fair at current prices. The wool market was inactive and nominal. A little better inquiry for broom- corn is reported, and the recent advance is maintained by sellers. Secds were unusually quiet. Orders have dropped off, and the sales Saturday were chictly of the late varieties. Hay wis steady, except prairie, which closed easy. Hides were in request and unsettled in price. ‘The receipts continue rather small, but some dealers are quoting a lower range of prices in consequence of the lite fall In the Eastern markets. ‘rade in green fruite was fair at pre- vious prices. Lake freights were fn active demand and closed firm at 3c for corn and 3} for wheat to Buffalo. Early these rates were shaded %@\c, but the market recovered as soon as it became evident that shippers wanted vessels. Itis reported that last Friday a prominent house in New York settled at $1.39 per bu on two cargoes of wheut, when the same grade could have been bought for export at about $1.28. It scems they sometimes have corners on the sca- board. . News comes from Jersey County in this State that the wheat there is already heading out, with prospects of an abundant crop. PROVISIONS. HOG PRODUCTS—Were duil and rather weak, especially on lard, which was hesvy in spite of the bellef that the forthcoming report would show a very large reduction in our stocks. The recent shipments have been quite large, but operators suid that the only result would be an increase of stocks elsewhere, which may weigh more heavily on prices than if the Jsrd were kept here ti wanted for consumption. Liverpool reported an advance of 1s in pork, but did not produce much impression here. Meats were easier. The deliveries of pork on Alsy contracts were very large: and of lard nud meats rather light. THE THIRD TERM, The Son’s Alleged Reason Why the Father Wants x Third Term—‘ For the Future Salvation of the Country. Spectat to Cinctunatt Commercial, Carcaqo, April 29.—The point of a remark- ; able conversation between Col. Fred Grant and one of the most distinguished Republican lead- ers of Illinois has just come to the light. Col. Fred upbraided the veteran for not being actively at work for Gen. Grant. During the conversation he said: “‘ My father says that there may come a time in the history of the Republic when it may be to the vital Interests of the people of this country tonominate a President for a third term, and when precedents set by Washington and Jeffer- son would stand in the way of the common Welfare. It. therefore, becomes important to get that obstruction to the safety of the Re- public out of the way. My father says he is ina Position to make that trial and win that victory against a public superstition of a dan, precedent. bias oe ‘This speech of young Grant took the distin- guished citizen aback. It was evident that the young man bad been impressed with the divine mission of his father, and it is probable that the gentleman would not have deemed it advisable to make his utterances about the views of Gen. Grant public. But fertuuntely there was a wit- ness who takes the public into confidence through tho Commercial. The name of tho prominent leader is withheid only because of his innocence of this publication, But itcan be furnished, and he will not deny the truthfulness of the above report. Gen, Grant recently said to an_intimate per- sonal friend, undorstood to be B. B. Washburne, it he was absolutely sure of the nomination at Chicago. He, however, expressed considera- ble feeling because un effort was making to get his own State away from . He felt that he Ought to be allowed the sweet boon of a solid Miinois in the National Convention. ‘The opposition to his wishes on this subject is undoubtedly responsible for the extraordinary spectacle now presented, for the first time in the history of this Nation, of # distin citizen, who has been Commander-in-Chief of the armies of the country, who bus twice been ite President, going about from county to coun- ty, Secking by his presence to intluence, and by his action to control, the primaries for his owa advantage in the National Nominating Conven- Hon.
