Spectat Dispateh to Tha Tribune, Preapecrma, Pa, July 2—The quinine monopoly was knocked endways by the sudden removal of the protective duty, and the blow {a the more staggering ‘because the duty on barks? nnd everything entering into the manufacture remains the samo, Quinine was a specialty with Powers & Weightman, the senior partner of which firm dicd a year ago, the richest man {1 the city. Its manufacture Is extensively carried onin Parts, Stratford, Eng., and tn Frankfort, bat there fs not a factory in the world to com- para with that of Powers &° Weightman as the Falls of the Schyulkill, which covers ton acres, besides a Iaboratury 190 fect by 800 nearer the centre of the city. Farr, founder of the house, was the first to introduce the drug into this country, sixty years ago. Onty three years after Farr founded the housa of, Powers & Weightman the house of Rosengarten & Son was started, which now owns a manufactory covering a whole square, and produces the finer chemicats, especially sulphates of quinfa and other, alkaloids of clnchona bark. These two houses are almost the only manufacturers of quinine {n the country. Powers & Welghtman have conalderably increased their protits by the purchase of the right to use the dry process, A million and a quarter;of ounces are sold every year for an average of $2.40, protection being worth from, 50. to 70 cente an ounce, the duty, being 20 per cent. Farr enid to-day toa correspondent that the firm would glye up the manufacture, The retaller sold it at three cents a graip, making $9.50 an ounce profit on real quinia, und $11.85 when palming off cinchona on the, purchaser, The foreten ar- telu wus tor inferior to tint ut doniestte manu facture, und was never weed by the profession, on account.of inipurities. ‘The onty retult 0! making It free of duty would bo to drive them out of the manufacture, without doing the retall custumer auy good, for the drugciets would not reduce the price at all, ‘They would have to stop, because they bad to pav 10 ner vent on the hark, $2 per gallon on the solvent used in the imanniacture, und 100 per cent on wlcohol, all of which foreign manu- Jactures bad free. It would take them six weeks to work up what they had on hand, and then they should discharge cighty men, Last year they imported 6,000,000 pounds of bark, and they gave orders at once to stop all pur- chases, ‘The fufluenca for. the change came from the South, which had comparatively little interest, a8 her trade was small uni of ‘no con- sequence, the greater antounts being sold in} . the North and Weat, y <i SPRINGFIELD ITEMS.
