16 EE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: SUNDAY. £85 i§—-SIXTHEN PAGES, HAILEOAD ‘TiME Taal. READ ESTATE. Withdrawal of the Oppositicn to the Michigan Avenue Boulevard. Benzfits of That Improvement to Tax- payers and Real Estate Owners. Active Opening of the Building Season- Small Houses and Stores in Demand. Sales and Building Permits of the Week---Extension of the West Side Horse Railway, It ig now understood that the opposition of Mr. Weutworth in the Legislature to placing Michigan avenue under the care and supervision of the South Park Commissioners has been withdrawu, und that the bill will probably pass without opposition.: In this matter Mr. Weut- worth bas represented the property-ownurs along the parkway of which Blue Island avenue isa part from the Brighton Canal bridge to the twenty-acre park at the corner of the north-and- south boulevard and Fifty-fifth street. They have been paying their taxes for parkaud boule- yard purposes for half a dozen years, and GETTING MAINLY PROMISES that their boulevard should be improved at sci time in the indefinite future. .A few land- uwuers have steadily opposed the tocation, and ‘Mr. Wentworth’s proposed amendment, as we tow learn, simply required that all other ap- proaches to the park sould be opened at the sume time with the Michigan avenue. These lands were all condemned Jast week, and the Park Commissioners cau now, as soon us the Michigan-Avenue bill is passed, at once proceed to complete one of the finest driveways in the world, extending from the Brighton Caual bridge to the South Parks, and thence around by Michigan avenue to the city. Nor is this all. It needs but little more than haifa mile of boulevard to be o pened by the We ide Commissioners to connect Doulas Park with the boutevard at the Brighton bidee tu make the drive complete from Lincoln Park through the three West Side parks all round i.e city. some twenty-five or thirty miles. This wiit duubticss be done atan early day. It cer- tanly should be, for the city is now cntering ona NEW ERA OF PROSPERITY, und no single improvement will so certainly attract wealthy and cultivated families from all the Western cities as the completion of these splendid driveway ‘They will invite and secure far n.ore taxable wealth to the city than. they have’ cust, and thus add greatly to her prestige Now that the opposition to the passazeof the Michigan-Avenue bill iswithdrawn we hope Mr. Wentworth wili unite with our ocier Representatives to secure its passage at tbe earhest day possible. Building has begun with vigor, although the + spring has not yet fairly opeaed, The prices of material are not as chean as in former vears, and brick is scarce, but there are signs of more than usual activity in the erection of NEW HOUSES AND STORES. “Ze proportion of the houses tobe erected Ak this vear will be of 3 kind to rent at $25 to amonth. There is a stronger demand for thi 2 of tenements than for aus wiher. A cod nd ‘also exists for retail stores near rhe ess centres. ‘There are not enough small stores. The demand for them is felt especially on the Scuth Siie, and extends as far south on ‘Wabash cyenue 2s Sixteenth street. Among THE BUILDING PERMITS of the week were those to Bernhardt Rittel. two-story brick dwelling, 21 feet, Ne i] Larrabee street, $2,000; John O*Dunn, story and basement brick dwelling, 25: Park avenue and Leavitt strect, elviile, four-story an x125 feet, No. 81 Michigan avenue, $10,000; Joseph Maun, two-story brick dwelling, 21: Sevt, No. 478 Sedgwick street, Conuelly, two-story brick barn, 163x: blacksmuth-sbop. 24x48 feet, Halsted street and South Branch, 33,600; Charles Miller, two-story and basement brick dwelling, 22340 feet, Nu. 9 West Nineteenth street, 32,200; Peter Rech, three-story and dwelling, coraer of Madison and Laflin streets, to cost $12,000. Messrs. McGraw & Downey have been award- ed the contract yor the masoury work for W. F¥. Stores’s new residence at the corner of Forty- third street and Grand boulevard. ‘The minor contracts have not as yet been Iet, as it will be two years before the mason work will be fin- ished. The eutire cost of the house will be about $300,000. The title to the church property of ST. ANN’S PARISH, 2 situated at the corner of Wentworth avenue and Parkway Pavilion, has laiely teen straight- ened out by the efforts of the Ri Began, the pansh priest. There was a clause in the deed which rendered tbe property com- paratively worthless, and = under cer- tain contingencies it would have reverted to the original owner. This has been remedied and a perfect 2itle obtained. The compl q ‘The plans are already-drawn, and the work will be commenced about the 15th of afay. ‘The foundations for a structure to cost about $60,009 Were laid two years aso under the direction of tie Rev. Father Leyden, the incumbent at that time. ‘he plaus have since been moditied, and a structure ensting about $25,0J0decided upon. The work when berun will be pusbed and prob- able completed this season. Although itis but Httie past the middle of March, louse agents report. themeelves over- ruu with applications for houses, and the crowded appearance of their offi their statements. deuts, but the usual proportion of outsiders have made their appearance. It is too early as yet to tell defimtely what will be . THE COURSE OF RENTS, but agentstalk of nothing worst arulethan adhering to present prices. . ‘There is no general expectation of av advance, and no suc exe of uemand over supply as to warrant it. -‘ #reatest activity in houses at present ison the North and Soutn Sides.
