THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1878—~TWELVE PAG ES, JUDGE BLODGEIT. His Interview Yesterday with thé Hon, Carter H. Harrison, Tho @Genernl Fecling Is that There Sliould Be an Inyestigation, - There were soma developments yesterday in the matter which has oeen. naitating the com- munity for some weeks, and whieh, apparently, will not down at the word of command,—the charges against Judee Dlodgett. Tum Tris- uNE has Kept tho publie informed o referenco tothe communication which was sent carly in the week by Mr. J. N, Jewett and his commities to Messrs. Cooper, Knickerbocker, and Bheldon, . the custodlans of the eharges and the resolution for the pro- posed fmpeachment procecdings, Up to yesterday no reply had beeo sent to the request that tho Investigators furnish tho Committeo with a copy of the clintzes. ‘In the carly. part of the afternoon, however, it was learned that THE REPLY bad been sent, and that [t4 tenor was not at all vlcasing to the Committce. Whilo nobody wuald say what thereply contained, it took very Mttle zuessing to arrive at tha probable results of the correspondence, . From previous Intersiews with the {three *impeachers® 1t was appsrent to the roportorial mind that they thought they discovered fn this ro- quest forn copy of the chargesa very clever sclieme to get possession thercof, with the aim and end §n view of having them inquired Into Ly an ex-parte committee, who, Dpresumably, would never report thercon, which, for want of a better pame, would betong to what s known as the ¢ whitewashlug "' order. The impeach- cra, as one of them rumarked the other day, wanted themecives et down ns rather “too sharp ' for nn{llllnx of that kind, and the reply which was sent. yesterday ls understood to have set forth, practically, the same iden, couched fn the usual polite and diplomatic language which ordlnanly pnss between gentlemen on different sides of & leuce. TAR COMMITTRE was evidenlly preparcd for action, for which they sliould thank. Tur TRInUNS for keeping them posted, Sometbere between the hours of 1and 210 the afternvon these wentlemen—>Mr, , N. Jewett, tho Jlon. Thomas Hoyne, Mr, E. B. McCaee, Judga Lawrence, Mr. M. W, Fuller, Judge Trumbull, and My, F. H. Kales—got together in Mr, Jewctt's office, and, after con- slterable talk, decided to call a meoting of the Bar Assoclation this afternoon to sec what should bedone, The specific object of the meeting could not ‘80 raglly be learned, A rc- porter for this paper, however, hailed one of the wentlemen on_the street after the meeting, and wnsg lca to Infer, from his mformaut’s remarks, that thy meeting would be ealled upon to take into voneideration the provriety of demandln copy of ho charges, or of passing corfaln resolutlons “caleulnted’ o make the refractory trio fecl uncomfortable, and even 8 uiry b thelr buots, nt tho censurs which would be visiied upon them for thelr coutso fn refusing to give up the charges, The gentle- man further intimated that thelr retussl wos looked upon in some quarters as an indlcation that their so-called charges Qidn’t amount to mueh, and that they procecded from men who were willlug to eugage in this blackeplng of uien’s characters without giviog them a chance tobe heard. These charges, the gentleman contended, no matter hot . frivolons, should be brought beforo the Bar Association frst, that belng tho rmpnr body to cdusider them, con- slstine as (¢ did of tbe most prominent lawyers 10 the tlty, Instead of doine’ tids,'these inen lad taken them to Washington, and, having Iatled to bring them before thic [louse, it was all the more propar, in view of the publicity given to tha fact that there werp charges, to let the Bar Assoclation {nguire into them. Awmong tho rumors which got abroad dunng the day was one to the effect that A CONPRIENCR liod been held at Mr. F, I, Winaton's office in tic marning between Judge Blodgett, the Hon, Caster f1. Hortlson, and Mr, Winaton, at which Judge Blodgett requested an investization of tte charges acainst im. Aunother rumor even went 80 lur 08 1o say that tho Judge had plneed o letter in Mr, Harrison’s hands to that cffoct. Mr, Winston, when scou o -tho “Hfré o) denled that' any _such conference had been held, nnd stated that Judge Blodgett had not, 80 far atleast ashe knew, requested an Investigation, although ho had no doubt ho wouid do 8u nt the proper timo. The fact of tha arrest of Grorzo A. Bialkie, the cnstudian of the Fidelity Sufety Deposit vaults, on o charge of stealiug some of the funds {ntrusted to his charge, was published in yostorday's paper. The amount taken by him, however, was $3,000, and not $1,000, as then stated. The bouds belooged to the Towa Rail- road Company, and were held {in cscrow by Re- celver Turpin, haviog been deposited with him three mouths ago. Thursday Judge Dlodgett ordered him to deliver them to Mr. Holcomb, the Recelver of the road, and this gentlemun called for them sbout 4 In the nfterncon.
