The Matter Braught Before the Bar Associa- tion. A Committee Appointed to Find Out What the Charges Are; And What the Evidence, it Any, to Sustain Them. Remarks by Messrs. Jewett, Trumbull, Black, Law- rence, Ayer, Etc. The Majority Believe that There Should Be an Investi- gation, Althongh Certain that Its Result Will Be a Yindication of the Judge., - A Small Minority of the Association Opposed to the Appointment of the Committee. ANTICIPATIONS. The theme of couversation yesterday among the legal fraternity generally, and wmore espe- cially among the two natural divisions of Blod- gett and anti-Blodzett men, which have arisen siuce the charges aouinst the District Judge first obtained circulation, was the special meetine of the Bar Association, called by the Board of Man- agers for 3 o’clock in the afternoon. The lan- Zuage of the published cali was a little blind when it proclatined, in ** good, set terms,” that the gathering was to be *for the puc- pose of considering what actlom, It any, it may be ‘proper for the Association to take in reference to charges alleged 1o have been made nzainst the Judze of the United States District Court for the North- ern District of Iilinols, and to take such action in the premises as may be deemed dest.” But to the Initinted,—those who had Kept rosted as . to the doings and contemplated doings of both sides, and who thought themscives capable of readiog between the lincs, and seeing through & millstone when there was a hole through it,—the | meaninz of this . smoothly- worded invitation was not hidden beneath the “pglitteriny geperalities”’ in which it was couched. - From sundry givings-out the orevious day, and from what was learned ves- teruay morning, it bezan to be generally known that the meeting would most probably explode a goodly amount of indignation over the refasul of the impeaching trio to yroduce the charges, and that certain formidable resolutions -were preparing at the 6ffice of certain lawyer who is apparently conducting Judge Blodgett’s case for him, which resolutions would, if adopted, - pour out the seven vials - of wrath upon the trio, so to speak,’ and lold them up to public scorn and things. lc was also whispered about that the trio didu’t propose to be “like durnb, driven cattle,” io be resoluted against, or to be in any way iotimi- aated or bulldozed, but that they proposed to be on hand, or be represented by their mext friends, hear what the other fellows bad to say against them, and—talk back. ‘The prospect, from 2l that conld be learned, was exceedingly pronusing of au interesting council of war with preliminary wordy skirmishes to give it zest and. flavor. So to the legal fraternity of Chicago, with the exception of such as were too busily engaged in the earning of fees and in jmpartine wisdom to comparatively iznorant Courts and juries, made all the necessary preparations to bein at the tan. The result was a numerous eathering, in the roomsof the Bar Association. of the law- yers of the city,—some members of the Associs- tion, but a Jarge number outsiders,—the biz and little, the high-oriced and the geatlemen who may be said to oe ‘‘ofF color™ in tne matter of fees. the distinguished and the commou run, the friends of Judee Bledgett and his enemies, those opposed to investization and those in favorof it, together with the doubting Thomases, the indepsndents in the mass, the men who had not as yer jumped to cither side of the fence. Among the geatlemen present THE TRINONE reporter was able to pick out the following: John Jewett, Thomas. F. Withrow. W. H. ing, L. L Bisbee, E. B. McCagre, E. Walker, .loh Rountree. B. F. Aver, H. 8. Monroe. . ., Alex. McCoy, Stephen_ F. Goodwir, Hugh White, John lecper,Judec Trumball, Judize Caton, J. O._ Gloyer, George Aerbert, F. Cutral,Jobu Mattocks, Ed. Mason. Unly one of the itnpeacting trio—-Mr: thejdon, the” Seeretary—put in an appearance in person. Just how far the eencral expectation ms :o what the meeting would do was realized, the following report of the proceedings will show. The Association was called to order at a quar- ter after 3 o’clock by Vice-President King, who usked the Secretary to read the call for the meeting. Mr. Sheldon did so. ‘The Vice-Presiaent pleasure of the body. asked what was the MR. JEWETT. Mr. John N. Jewett arose and said: Some- thing more than two weeks ago the public press of this city somewhat startled many of us by the aunouncement that certain members of the professfon in Chicago were at the City of Washington endeavoring to get before Congress certain petitions or ‘statements affecting the of- ficial integrity of the District Judge of the Uuited Statcs for this district, and evilently in- tending, if the newspaper reports could be cred- ited, to press the cbarges which were embodied in their petition or statement hefore the House of Representatives as the basis of proceedings for the impeaclment of Judee Blodgett. Shortly after that intellizence reached us in that way, a cousiderable vumber of the older members of the Bar, probably forty or [ifty, had 2 contercuce at which a letter was prepared, ad- dressed to the - Hou. Carter H. Harrison, which has alrealy been published?and with whict you are cll familiar. That letter was numerously sizned and forwarded to our Represcnt- atives in Congress from this State, throned Mr. Harrison. At that same meet- ing a committee was appointed, unofficialiy ot course, except as a- representation of the meeting, to consider what further steps shounld be taken, if any, in reference to that matter. By accideut, { was made Chairman of that Committee. Nothing was done by the Commiic- mittee, and it dida’t scem proper to do any- thing until after Mr. Harrison’s retaru; but the Comnmittee, after consultation, deemed it ad- visabie Uo fequest from Mr. Harrisun & stato-
