8 THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE SUNDAY. DECEMBER 22, 1878—SIXTEEN PAGES. POISONING THE CHILDREN. Uuscrupulous Manufacturers and Cheap Confectioners to Blame—Where to Get Pure Candies. How the doting parent would be shocked if told that bis little darlings were eating arsenic, and how keen would be his auguish if nelearned st the polson was sdministered by his own land? And yet how many parcots are thoughtlessly endangering the health and even the lives of their children by allowing them 10 eat cheap candies mage of the most imnpure and even filthy materials, and adultered with all inanner of poisonous coloring matter? The ‘recent investigations of ihe United States revenue ofticials disclosed a most wlanning system of adulterations practiced at some of tlie Eastern sugar refincries, and it was “found zhat the bulk of this adulterated sugar was scld to the manufacturers of cheap candies, Tuese unwholesonie compounds_bear about the same relation to pure cands that the noxious toad-stool does to the delicate mushroom. It is something terrible to think that when we woula gladden the learts of the dear little oues with the lonz expected holiday sweets, we run the risk of feeding them . poisonous stull 1hat is liable to carry disease and even death jnto therr delicate systems. Tne TRIBUNE bas had oceasion to refer to this matter in the past, and it has been shown that certain deslers offer what they call ¢ bank- rupt stocks” of candy at - prices below the auctnal cost of the raw suzar. - Of course the in- fvence is plain. Such candy must necessarily *e adulterated, and the purchaser must take his chances on the particular _kind of poisun to be found therein. It is creditable to Chicago, however, that some of our leading confectiouers arc willing to suler a loss of business rather than sucrifice their 1eputations by offering such aduiterations Lo their customers. To secure sweetmeats, therc- Sore, that will be sbsolutely pure, and alike pinssing to botk old and yotug,2purchases must be wade from stretly Feliable houses, and as sueh strictly reliable nouses T1E TRINUNE can cordially recommend the foilowing: g C. The only question raised was the ability of any maker to construct pianos of that shape that would prove_enduring in tone. This difficulty was grapoled with at the outset, however, by Miessre. Hallet, Davis & Co., and, by making a patiens and understanding” study of all the causes and effects, they were enabled to develop prindples sud improvements which have wiven their uprights a world-wide reputation for re- maining permanentiy in tuoc. As they control alltliepatentsior toese improvements, no pianos af other makers can contain them. Mr. W. W. Kimball is the. only person in Chicago who can sell you these glorions musical triumphs. .
