RoME, Ga., Dec. 13.—A genulne sensation has been ereated fo this little city by the arrest of two well-known nnd respectably-connected citle zens upon the charze of murder, ‘The atory upon which the arrest s based is strange one. About four years ago a policeman named Peter Moouey was found dead upon the track of the Sclma Road, near the city, The body wos discavered by s gentleman and his wife who had been out visiting st alate hour. The back of his head had been crushed in by some heavy weapou, and he had evidently been thrown upon the track by the per- sons who bhad murdered bim in the hope that the trmin would so mangls him that his death would be sccrodited to a raflroad accident. Mooney was s handsome, Lrawny fellow, very much liked by the ‘people generally, and was sald to be an especial favor- 1ta withs the fomale sox. Flis murder crested an intenso excltoment, but no clew could be dls- covered that would justify an arrest. Rumor assigned a dozen causes for the killing, and sus- picion polnted ita finger at many parties, But nothing definite was obtainea, and the Coro- ner's jury dissolved In dospalr, The father of Mooney, & determined sort 6f giaut, nover halted 1n the search for a clew until ho had spent his last dollar, and then he becantu’ hopelessly in- sune, was sent to the asylu m, nad ‘died’ there short time since, Alter his doath the case passed apparentiy out of theminds of men. A few daya sluce the quict people of Romo were astounded to learn that C. C, E1lfs, then In Toxas, and Tobe Cooper, then in Polk County, had been arrested upon the charge of murdering Moonoy, and were be- ing brought by the detectives to Rome. Hoth of thess men left tho vity shortly after the mur- der was committed, For n long time the public could mot wuess at the clew that had Jed sa thelr arrest, It was sald that s newro'fo Chattalibbga ‘who wasdying with yellow fever had confessed that they hud emoloyed Uim to help carry the Dody to the Lrack. The commitment trial, how- evur, developed that Mr, Willlam Jones, an At- lanta detective, bad worked up the case from & different standpoint. A Mr. Nathan Webb, who lived fu Rome, swore that on the eveniog of the murder Cooper bad offered him a sum of money if he would entlce Moonoy across the river where he could geta quict lick at bim. Webb asked him what the matter was, aud he sald Moancy had fusultea his wite, Webl declined to iInterfere. Other ‘Wwituesscs sworo that Elhs agreed that he would get Mooney out, aud that Cooper swore that ho would kill bim, Ellls Ia sald to have mado threats also. Webb swore that tho morning after the murdor he was in tho crowd that was collected talking about the casc, and, scelug Cooper standing in a_stalrway in his stocking feot, went to him. Ccoper ssked him what tho crowd meant, Webb says, *You koow what It means.! Cooper thensald, ** Yes, L did kil him, G—da 4. bim,” e then usked Webb to go back and see If they were suspect- {og bim. Webb reported that thoy did suspect him. Cooper then whivped out a plstol, and, put- Uog it ot Webb's breast, vaid, ** You nave been telling them what you kaow.!! Webb denled this and begied Cooper not to kill him. Cooper's wife —who, by the way, Is said to be very bitter againat hier husband—begeed him uot w shoot, A short thine atterward, while standing behind Cooper, she polnted 1o a bloody pair of whoes bid under the bed, directly caliing Webb's atiention to them, Webh testified that Cooper aud Eilis, Leforu leaviug Rome, offered him $50 10 leave with thew, mh did persuade hiin to leaye with them. A citizen who was “reported 1o have sald that Etlls waked him up the night of the murder and told bim of it, ssylog that Cooper had killed Mooney, when sworn doufcd the truth of this rumor,” But bis wile, when Lrought upon the staod, awore that it was true, and that Ellis had so tatlied to her hus- tand, This direct Lestuwony, with =» uumber of corroboratiog clrcumstances, led Judge Underwood to refuse to permil the balliog ‘of the prisoners, and committed them for trinl. Thers i3 tho most futense excitement. 1 am inforined that since the refusal of ball several wituesses liave yvolunteera to testlly against the prisoners; baving been afraid to olfer na long as there was a chauce that the des- Berato men would 'be turned upon the strects, “Ihis best abllity of the Bar s ongazed In the de- fense of the prisvners, but it 1s generally be- hieved that the caso against them Is very strong. It s sald that Couper bas uever denled that e lnfium.y, sud that Ellls sunply says ** I did not kil Mooney,” ‘Tho warrants of arrest were sworn out by Mrs. Moouvy, who will prosecute thecase. Ii is sald the full developments of 1he case, fnvolving the proof of Eilla? couucction with this tnurder, aad the motives that led bim foty ity will result in a seusation and lead to the arreat of otber parties. 1t 1s likely to become 8 causs celbre o the Georgia annals, E THE INDIAN TERRITORY, &pecial Diwatch 1o The Tridune, 87, Louts, Dec. 18.—fsase O, Parker, United Blates District Judge of the Western District of Arksusas snd the Indian Territory, is fo Bt. The enforcement Immediately | PiTTanuna. Pa., Dec. 13.—Bucoa Vista, fo prior to 1875 was & little lax, this county, has for several years been terrorized by a gang of outlaws, who com- mitted all manner of depredations, including Incendiarism and, It Is believed, murder, but who always managed to clude detection. County Detective Dressler has been for some timo onthe track of thess miscreants, whose operations have also extended Into the adjoin- Ing County of Westmoreland, and. last week two of themn were arrcsted {n the latter county and committed to jall for trial. To-day anotber of tho gang was arrcsted In. Indeed, the entire gang, as far as knowp, are active politicians, nearly all of them having been delegates at one time or swother. The circum- stances connccted with to-day’s arrests are and the ruffians cousequently emboldencd, To-dsy, in my opinion, the Indlan Territory Is a8 peaceful and quict 28 any scction of the West. and South. ‘The Indian Territory s generally in a prosperous condition, - The Indlans arc progressing rapldly in civilization. They have good schools and plenty of them. The wild Indlans In the weatern part of the Terrltory are rapldly becoming civilized, and the crimes comn- mitted among them are almost exclusively the foul work of white men and negroes. The JIndian, when & criminal, ia vory bloody. He will murder. for & song, and will kill in the most inhuman manner, and will hack his vietim all in pleces. Rum has for years been the Indian’s grest incentive to crime, but there hhs been a glorious chango ot late. In fact, a Red-Rtibbon revival prevailsamong the red men, and to-day all the better Indlans look with great disfavor vn the use of intoxicating llquors, White men for years made a very profitable business by selling tire.water to the Indiaos. ‘These liquor-peddlers, if convictea, are sen- ishment. tenced to loug termns in the Penitentlary, They still ply thelr peroicious tradeunicss ‘lov. | 88 follows: On the 16th day of Uctober, 1677, 1y watched y Deputy United States Marshals | the house of Isasc Orwin, In Elzabeth Town- and the Indlan suthoritfes.
