13 PARIS The Gay City Shocked by the Death of Queen Mercedes. ke National Fetes of the 30th of June--- The Review at Longchamps. Hpdame MacMahon and the Shah—Theat- vical and Musical Gossip, Prath_of B. Chesi-Nontizny from Hydrophobia- * " The American Independence Fete, Spteial Carrespondence of The Tribune. pagts, June 27.— We were all prepariug to be very merey on the 30th, when Paris was shock- ed by the DCWs of the death of poor little Mer- ceds, the Queen of Spain. There was some- thing so affecting and uncommou in the mis- fortupe that has suddenly overtaken the young ‘monarch, something so touching and romantic jn the short lovesstory of those two Royal chiidren,—a King of 20, and a Queen of 18,— 1hat the sorrow we feel is not wholly lip-sor- yow s in 50 many cases. She was of the ourbon race, a French Princess, the daughter of the prond and intrizuing Duke de Montpen- der. But, ina Republic, the Bourbons have Jttle dluim on_ sympathy, and_sorfie_claim on ourantipathy. -Itis not her birth, her nobi: ood, or her lofty station, that recommended per to us. The reason lay deeper. *“One tonch of Nature™ made us the kin and friends of her who vesterday was Mercedes,~—Mercedes, Queen of Spain. Alas, POOR MERCEDES. The Elysee and the Ministries . will go into mourning—Republicsn mourning, I mean, not shadowed forth by crape and sables worn to order. All the official balls and soirees which were to have taken place this week and pext have been indefinitelv postponed. It 1s being debated by some papers, even, whether it would not be decent and right to delay the grea national fete at present fixed for Sundar. Very strange stories are being whispered about the way in which Mercedes came to Ler death. Som¢, pointing to thestified jealousy and hatred entertafoed towards her by certain Spanish political and. religous parties, have dared to hint at poisoning. At the best, however, their surmiscs are unsupported by serions proofs. The doctors certify that eke fell a victim to gastric fever and internal hemorrhage—not un- connected, doubtless, with her premature con- finement the other day. Is it not sad to look ‘back now to the morning, five months ago, on which the Royal bride and bridezroom, amidst the cheers and prayers of an anclent people, rode forth in all the pomp and glory of earthly power, to be wrdded jn those *indissoluble” bands of matritony that the great enemy has dissolved £o quickly! It was - A LovE-MATCH, 4 1ike that of Victoria and Albert; ang, what was more, a love-mateh arranged in defiance of anti- quated prejudice snd courtly convention. No gooner did Alphouse X1I come to the throme than bis counselors, with motives more or less disinterested, set to work to dud bim a suitable wife. “Asit happened, Alphonse XII. had set- tled the aatter in his own mind lone before, aod was in 1o wav disposed to listen to the sue- gestions of gray-headed politicians, honest or dishonest. fe loved his cousin, and ho marrfed her. How long did ir affection stand the rude test of time? Vhocan say? Only this do we know: The grief of the stricken husband fsintense. He was present to the last, and had the cruel comfort. of holding his young wife in his arms when she expired. But enouch tlace has been given to the dead. THE THEATRES arc doing a rosring trade, but their bills are still as unattractive as ever. At the Odeon they have hashed up the *Danicheffs” again, At the Ambigu the foreigners are being treated to 8 revival of that very unfamiliar work, the “Two Orphans,” and at the Porte St. Martin the managers boldly anuounce the continued performance of the “ Tour du Monde.” As for the Opera, it has positively not produced a soli- tary movelty since the *Fandauzo,” several months azo: and we Lear nothing more about {Polycucte,” thoueh the period reasonably al- . lowable for mounting it has loug been passed. Judi’s ‘bathing ‘drawers are still thought dravers or “draws® sufficlent by the Varictes; . and the “Petit Duc” fills the little Renaissance every eveniug, though the operetta bas mow run nearly 150 pighte. This evening the Theatre Lyrique is to open with Pessard’s’ * Capitaine Fracasse,” of which a great deal is expected’ and the Gym- Dpast is to produce a comedy entitled La Pétite Correspondance,’ by the side-splifting autnors of “Bebe” and “‘Les Dominos Roses.” It would have appeared already but tora h; MOST TERRIBLE CALAMITY which has fallen upon M. Montigny, the well- known mauager of the Gymuuse. M. Chier- Montigny, his’ son (who was_one day to have taken uver the munazement), died this week of hydrophobia. He was a general favorite, and ouly 22, with great talents and very amiable qualitics. His” untimely and awrul end has thrown a gloom over the whole artistic commu- mity. M. Cheri-Montizny had always u sinrular | affection for animals. It was almost u pussion. He used to pass hours and hours blaving with the fierce tenants of Bidel's menageric, which has taken up its quarters guite close to his house. Amongst his domestic pets was a Hitle Scateh terrier. On his return one evening from town he went up to the dog to caress it, when it flew at him and bit him slightly on the face. At the moment he did not attsch particular importance to the matter, having no reason to suppose the animal was mad; but some days after, ashc was sitting at the table, he was horrified by a lugubrious howling in the yard under bis win- dows. From that momcut a prophietic convie- tion of his doom seized him. IHe rose from the table without a word, and went down to the yard, where he found’ (as he expected) his pet terricr ‘showing all the symptoms of the most mysterious and hideous of diseases,— RABIES. The dog was taken to a veterinary surgeon immediately, and soou after expircd,—of -iu- flammation. the surzeon said. Poor Montigny knew better. Ne took to studving his uwn case,—buying numbers of medical treatises beariug on the subject of hydrophobia. So he awaited, with remarkable fortitude, the fiftcenth day, ou which he expected the aeadly symptoms would, if ever, becowe manifest. On Sunday be went to the review, feeling well. He re- turned witha bad Leadache, and'two days after expired raving and foaming at the mouth, in agony. His unfortunate father is unconsolable. Sixieen vears ago another heavy blow had well nigh killed him. Rose_Cheri, the cclebrated actress, his whife, then fell & vietim to her un- selfisu devotion. To save her child, who was 1aid low with the croup, she sacrificed herself. Deep was the sorrow when sbe died, but even deeper was it when they bore Cheri-Montigny to bis peaceful orave at Possy. Let us hope he DID NOT SUFFER IN VAIN. 1t is expedient that one man should die for the people.” The Montiguy case has stirred the police authoritics to some activity, and it is probavle it will have the effect of diminishing the number of the murderous stray curs one sees running througn the streets here so often, unmuzzled and uncared for. It is time, hizh time, an- effort was made, not only here, but in every city, to stamp out the dread scourge of Liydzophobia. . With energy it could be done; bus there must be enerey, or 1878, like 1877, will see its scores of men,” women, and children verish in slow and ‘cruel torture. ‘The death of every sinzle person will be justly laid to the account of the law, unless the most stringent regulations urc enforced by the duthorities. Perhaps, when half-a-dozen Senators and Dep- uties have been bitten by mad cars, their wor- shiptu} colleagues will be swung into 2 sense of their own danier, snd something vigorous will be done. Now, if ever, is the time to say, “That thou doest, do quickly.” TIE THIRD OFFICIAL FRENCH CONCERT was given at the ‘Trocadero this afternoon, .in the presence of 1 tolerably lare audience, The vrocramme fncluded sclections from the & Parias,” (an unsuceessful opera of Membree’s, produced a few years back at the Chatele when the Chatelet was a povular opera-house) M. Last Monday, the 13th inst., several youna men went out huntiug on Liorseback, and when near William Nelson's farw they suddenly came upon two huze bears. They fired upon them and succeeded in killing one, but the other ran for the timber and passed out of sizht, notwith- standing that one of the boys, Jobuny North- over, put four chargzes of buckshot into him at short range. As the bear scemed lilely to cscape, Adam Benson sald he would_ride around the thicket, \which was s short distance, and head bim ofL. Jie accordinely stasted off alone, acd reached the other side of the wood before the bear. He dismounted and tied his horse to atree, and had waited but a few moments when the infuriated beast broke from the timber and rushed for him. Hle fired two shots, but the bear was upon bim. ‘The beast rose upon his bind legs as Adam ased strack ot him with his rifie, and _knocked the weapon from his hands. Then with a stroke of his paw he felled Adam to the earth, knocking - him’ between two lozs, and commenced to bite and claw him. Adam held the beast from his throat by erasping him by the shaogy hawr on eachside of his head. He Is a powerful young may, but he felt his strength beginning to fail, aod 'he knew that bis only hope was in the knife that he carried in bLis belt. He let 2o of the bear with his right hand and reached for the koife, but found it ‘was rone. Thrusting the empty sheath into the bear’s moutb, he gave himselfup for lost. The bear was maneling the muscle of his arm in a terrible manner, and wouldsoon have killed him, had not Jack Barnes” dog Rover come upon them. The dog attacked the bear fiercely and com- pelled him to leave Adam, who managed to crawl upon his horsc and ride back to where the rest of the party had stopped to skiu the other bear. When he reached them he was too weak to tell them what had bhappened. His friends | &. carried him home, and on the way he managed to tell them he was not anxious to box witha bear soon aguin. The bunters went to look for the bear, but found that it had escaped. As Benson’s injurics are all flesh wounds it is thought he will soon recover, but he msy lose the use of one arm. ————— EDISON'S MEGAPHONE FOR DEAF PEOPLE, To the Editor of The Tribune. ‘WasmNGTON, D. C.; July 10.—I have learned within o few days that Edison’s microphoue or megaphone for people of defective hearing will probably be completed in about a month. With- in a short time a good many improvements have been made fo it, so that it really will be of prac- tical benefit to the afllicted. The form in which it is to finally appear is not the cumbersome one in which it has been exnibited in oue or two places. The jostrument as perfecied is to be similar in shape and size to a large letter-port- folio, which could easily be carried in the hand ‘to any public place. The sounds will be con- veyed by this instrument through a flexible tube to the ear. This same gentleman says that a person who is deaf, no mattef how deaf, pro- vided the orzus are not destroyed, will, by the aid of this instrument, be able to hear stage- whisters distinctiy at the rear of a theatre. 1 myself have bLeen permitied to sce an experi- ment by which one could readily hear the step of a fly on a plece of ziass!
